So I may be moving to a new amp soon. Right now I have an MG head, B-52 cab. I'm getting into post rock, but I think I may start to dip into metal playing at some point soon. The problem is I'm not entirely set on a style of playing I'd like to pursue. So I know everyone says it but I'd prefer an amp that's very versatile

I was thinking maybe a Fender tube for the great cleans, but that wouldn't get me near a metal tone. Or would I be able to get near one with the right pedals?

Anyways, I have $600-$700 for a combo/half stack is my budget, but if there's something really worth the bit extra I'd like to hear about it. I'm looking for versatility but will settle if it gets one job done really well.

You could get the metal tones out of a Fender with a good O/D to push it. Where are you located? Willing to go used?

Vancouver, but could go to Seattle for something really good. I'm willing to go used for sure. If the fender can pull off a good metal sound with O/D pedals, I would pick one up later on down the road.

Okay, give me some time, I'll look through Craigslist.
The Fender without an O/D cranked will get you minimal breakup, nowhere close to metal territory.

Alright thanks, well I would consider both an O/D and amp at the same time I suppose.

I'd really look into that Marshall JCM2000 DSL. It's an amazing price, plus that thing can get you into metal territory and has some pretty good chimey cleans. wait, the mesa was just $350 10 minutes ago.

You could do what I did, go to Seattle, buy an Egnater Rebel 20, and use the B52 cab.

-Silvertone Kentucky Blue
-MXR CC Delay
-Ibanez TS-9
-Egnater Rebel 20

You're not truly playing guitar unless you know theory.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I haven't looked into the XXX much but I think I will now. The idea of keeping the B-52 cab is a good one, but the reason I would have money for a new amp is if I sell my cab+head.
