So firstly, im not a rap listener but i think that rap music was the last truly original form of musical expression to come out since soul and funk (and rock n roll before it). Rock music forms are still based on rock n roll etc.

Discuss.

Well Dance music, or electronic or whatever is more recent than rap.

dance music heavily influenced from 70s disco. electronica and drum n bass maybe but they are not major musical genres.

never heard of the roots? anyway the point is its the form of expression that is original rather than the vocal content.

I have a feeling I'm going to be kept up defending rap as a musical genre by this thread...

As to the original topic, it probably isn't the most recent but when it first emerged in the late 70s it was pretty unique. The only thing about back then that was even remotely like it was the dancehall reggae that rap largely emerged from.

Gangster rap maybe, but if you actually listen to a good sample of the genre you will find that a lot of the lyrics are far deeper.

So now rap is a music genre, separate from hip-hop?

Check out Atmosphere. Slug is far more talented than any other hip-hop artist I've heard.

A wigger is a white person who emulates black culture. Last time I checked black culture wasn't just chillin listening to rap.

I love me some good rap, most notably Lupe Fiasco, Tech N9ne, illgroove movement (more like slam poetry, rap, and jazz hybrid), lyrics born, etc., but it's for sure not the last "original music form".

The latest original vein of music I have heard is BT's "This Binary Universe", which is beyond modern terminology, but is similar to an organic, electronic, orchestral symphony, highly advanced yet deeply melodic. Groundbreaking stuff, really.
My God, it's full of stars!
