Sometimes I have trouble going to sleep because the concept of it kind of freaks me out. The idea of voluntarily losing consciousness and being completely oblivious and vulnerable to your surroundings really doesn't sit well with me. It's just weird. Is that what death is like? Just slipping away into nothingness?

This doesn't happen all the time, obviously. Sometimes I'm far too tired to care. But it certainly weighs on my mind a few nights a week, if not more. Am I a total freak for thinking about it this way?

I can't wait to pass out. All of my dreams are vivid and otherworldly. It's something I really do look forward to at the end of the night.
#5
You have too much free time to be thinking this much.

You need to spend more time on the Pit.

You're weird. And you're a total freak. Conscious or not you're still vulnerable to your surroundings mate

I think about it once in a while, like maybe a few times a month. I'm not all that bothered by it though, honestly. Plus, I don't want to drive myself into a fear of sleep so solid that I CAN'T sleep.
#14
I know what you mean, but as of now I would love a good nights sleep.

Yeah, I don't usually think about it all that much but if I do and get caught up in it, it can be hard to get to sleep.

I've never thought about it that way because you never are completely oblivious unless passed out or under the influence of sleeping pills. Don't you wake when you hear a loud noise, or your light turns on? The brain is still very much active when sleep, and though your main consciousness is not there while sleeping, you are still unconsciously aware of your surroundings.

Someone post BedFellows
I kinda feel the same, I'm a heavy sleeper so I wouldn't know if someone broke into the house or if there was an earthquake
#19
Be like a horse, sleep standing up!
But yeah I totally get where you're coming from. But I love sleeping so I don't really think the same way you do :s

I went through a phase like this before where you can't shut your brain off as you think "at what point does your brain just shut down?", it's nothing that unusual. Its a hard concept to grasp a you don't remember the exact instance of you brain actually turning off. I just rationalize with myself that at some point of the night it happens and you wont remember it in the morning and then I think about pure blackness and nothingness until I eventually do fall asleep. This caused a serious case of insomnia for me for a while.
#21
I think of it this way. Sometimes you need to slip away from reality for a few moments.
#22
Sleep scares me because I'm afraid of wasting all my time with it. The thought of spending 1/3 of my life doing nothing is horrifying. Like, an entire fucking third of my life, just gone.

But at the same time I realize the importance of sleep in making sure your waking hours are reaching their full potential.

It's a delicate balance.

That's true but I think the TS is talking more about when you are asleep you don't realize you are asleep and if you don't remember a dream then you also don't remember anything about that whole period of time you are asleep. For me the scariest thing is knowing I'm about to go sleep for over 7 hours which is a long time and during that time I will potentionally be staring at darkness but I won't remember what it is like once I get up. I probably did a shit job explaining that but I tried.

Loosen up dude. I see where you're coming from and I used to be that way - I vowed to never be a victim - But eventually I realized it's not a huge deal and not to take things too seriously.

The world is not out to get you.

I have the same feelings the TS explained sometimes. It's not that I'm afraid someone will do something to me, but slipping away into nothingness and not being able to think or move and being completely unaware of everything is sort of freaky.

I guess I've never really thought of that. I see no reason to fear it though. Being contemplative of it is ok, I guess.

Well...

Think of it like this...

We are ever moving and expanding biological creatures that require a system cooldown so we dont fry out our circuits.

Sleep deprivation can cause frustration, the ability to create impaired judgement, bad decision making, risk of heart disease, suppressed growth, improper digestion, decreased body heat.

We need REM sleep to repair our minds daily. Sure you slip into unconsciousness, but that's the price to pay for being a living creature. Are you on the run from the mob? Are there people out to get you constantly?

Let go. I know my sig says Free Your Mind for unorthodox thinking, but thinking too much can be a scary thing. It can be unhealthy.

So TS. Get some rest. Approximately 7-8 hours worth.

I kind of get where you're coming from, except with me it's not really that I'm afraid of sleep, it's that I just think too much about sleeping and then I can't fall asleep.
#33
I never get afraid, but it's weird when I think about it. It's weird when I'm thinking about being awake one second and being asleep the next.
Chinese Democracy is a great album, people need to get over Slash.

I love sleep. TS, maybe you should just try and fall asleep to some really relaxing, and positive music.

Just be glad you don't suffer from a sleeping disorder. My drummer's got Parasomnia, and from what he tells me about it, it ain't no fairytale.
