Hi

When using Audacity to record guitar, is there any way to adjust the sensitivity?

What I mean is, when I play on the clean channel and I strum a chord quite hard, it sounds distorted. How do I stop this?

Thanks.

Get someone else to play the chord, you're doing it wrong.

There's an Audacity FAQ and Questions thread in the Recordings and Riffs forum. That's where this should go.

I think its probably down to your mic more than anything

Lower the volume maybe? The sound will distort at high volumes.

No, my Blackstar is on about 2/10

Your signal is coming into the DAW too hot. Turn down the gain on your mic.

But I'm not even using a mic, I'm using one of these:

And don't say 'Oh that thing's crap use a mic' because I know it's not the cable because I have been able to get a clean sound, I just can't remember how .

Are you connecting your amplifier to your computer microphone port with that? That's always pretty sketchy, if you're willing to invest, try a line 6 Toneport UX. It's great for recording and comes with software and everything. If not the only thing I can suggest is turning your amplifier down and checking your computer microphone input settings and turning down the volume down there too. I don't think there's anything Audacity can do.
