Just read this, i think it's a ridiculous idea. I use a fair bit of bandwidth for totaly legal means, i share alot of my own files which i own, i download alot of freeware, i download job applications and send alot of emails applying for jobs, watch alot of legal tv and movies online etc etc.

It's alright for Matt saying the more bandwidth you use the more you should pay but he has the money to do this. I can barely afford to pay my internet bill which is high enough as it is without paying for excess bandwidth usage and i need it to look for jobs so i can pay my bills more comfertably.

Oppinions?

I searched, found nothing about this on the boards.

Matt Bellamy of Muse is the latest musician to weigh in on the music downloading problem. His solution? A progressive tax on all downloads tied to the amount of data usage regardless of what that data actually is:

"Usage should have a value. Someone who just checks email uses minimal bandwidth, but someone who downloads 1GB per day uses way more, but at the moment they pay the same. It is clear which user is hitting the creative industries and it is clear which user is not, so for this reason, usage should also be priced accordingly. The end result will be a taxed, monitored ISP based on usage which will ensure both the freedom of the consumer and the rights of the artists."

The notion is similar in concept to the Canadian recording media levy which sees Canadians paying a tax on all blank media regardless of its usage. The tax is then used to compensate musicians.

Similarly, an independent musicician sending his demo to another person would have to pay Muse for the privilege.

I guess she's pretty hot if you're into that "having a good music video, but not better than Beyonce's" kind of thing...

Matt Bellamy forgets the people who download his music are the same ones paying to see Muse in concert.
I will stand by all this drinking if it helps me through these days,
It takes a long time just to get this all straight.

That's utter bull****. Has he even heard of different internet tarriffs?
You're using UG classic, congratulations.

Oh yes, because everything downloaded (some things are free, ass hole) affects the "creative industries". Has this man never heard of Firefox, Reaper, Linux, or free music downloads courtesy of the artists themselves?

What a pretentious dickhead. He thinks that a service used worldwide should cost significantly more because the people using it have the potential to view art. Why does he think people care about a bunch of whiny musicians?

EDIT: I don't even like Muse, but I'm gonna go torrent their discography and seed the hell out of it, just for kicks.

In the eyes of the media someone who uses lots of bandwidth these days MUST be a pirate. I've got games downloading on Steam atm, over a gigs worth and my brothers on TF2 and my other brother isusing the internet too. That's a lot of bandwidth there and none of it illegal... people are thick.

The tax is then used to compensate musicians.

That pisses me off, why should musicians get any kind of special treatment from the government?

I think it's pretty obvious he's just being Matt. He's not serious.

That sentence isn't in quotation marks. That means Bell-end-amy didn't say it.

SHEdit: never mind, looks like you realized that

That's stupid. On my old internet connection me and my brother would play xbox and always get host (basically, if you're host, you're like the server and everyone connects to you) so we racked up a ****load of usage from that... (2 GB+ per day) Imagine if we had to pay extra. Matt Bellamy is stupid.
