Power

The chord root note
ex C
plus the 5th
ex C +G
equals a C5 chord or a power chord.

Seventh
Root Note
C
plus the 3rd and 5th
C E G
Plus the 7th
B
CEGB equals major 7th

i meant more along the lines of how those chords fit into the key, like is c7 the only 7th chord i can use in the key of C?

You just make the seventh chords using the key(c major for instance) scale
EX

C major key
C D E F G A B
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim

You can use
Cmaj7 (C E G B)

Dm7 (D F A C)

Em7 (E G B D)

Fmaj7 (F A C E)

Gmaj7 (G B D F)

Am7 (A C E G)

Bdim7 (B D F A)

Learn to harmonize the scale. There are some good lessons on how to do this.

its G7, not Gmaj7. Gmaj7 has the major 7th *F#* this has a minor seventh. the Bdim7 is a B halfdim7th,:3

I know your question has been answered, but I'd like to point out that C7 and Cmaj7 are different.

C7 is a dominant seventh chord, meaning it's a major chord with a minor 7th thrown in

1 3 5 b7

or C E G Bb

Cmaj7 is a major chord with a major 7th

1 3 5 7

or C E G B

Cm7 is a minor chord with a minor seventh

1 b3 5 b7

or C Eb G Bb

Cm/M7 is a minor chord with a major 7th (not a common chord)

1 b3 5 7

or C Eb G B
