Learning theory is a good start. Then look at tabs and sheet music for the bands you want to write in the style of, and analyse it to see what they're doing (what intervals to get which sounds, which techniques for different types of emotion, what chords where, song structure etc etc).
ProTone Pedals: Attack Overdrive
Fractal Audio: AxeFX 2
Engl: Fireball 60
Zilla: Fatboy 2x12
Carvin: DC700
Carvin: Vader 7
Schecter: KM-7 MKii
Schecter: Banshee 8 Passive
Jackson: DK2M

Pretend your holding a mystical orb in each of your hand and scream from the bowels of your lungs and move to Scandinavia it seems like the only place that death metal will get you any chick's. - Strong bad

Angst disguised as violent rage.

Edit: That may have come of as cynicism, but that's a serious tip. Lyrics wise, at least. As for the music, listen to some of your favorite death metal bands, take note of what they do and mimic them. Use similar keys, progressions, techniques, etc. Eventually you will learn all the ingredients that make a death metal song and be able to form your own style. Also, learn theory if you haven't already.
