I've been looking around musicians friend and I'd like to know which amp to get for my band. I'm looking at the randall RX120RH half stack or the peavey valveking half stack. my favorite bands are metallica, megadeth, (NOT SLAYER), and I like jason becker and Joe satriani but I really wouldn't be playing any of that. and I completely hate avenged sevenfold and most of this new ****, so if someone can help me out it would be apprecaited. and NO, I don't like paragraphs.

ok and I like pantera. if someone could help me out it would be appreciated. nearly 40 of you have looked at this. anyone own these amps? how is the distortion? do you prefer tubes to solid states? maybe even suggesting a different amp. any help at all?

ok, I think I'm gonna go with the RG200G3. sounds pretty useful for what I play and I won't have to lug around a half stack. thanks for all of your help by the way, couldn't have done it without you

Well your question here is to tube or not to tube. The randall is a good head or if you go combo they are reliable and sound good never personally used either one but imagine they are good like other randalls. I own a VK100 which I really like. there is a Valve King thread on here that has tons of info if you want to know more about them. the first page has audio links and vids links towards the bottom for you to check out.
Live Rig:
Peavey VK (power amp)
R&R Amps SL/LD (preamp)
EB Volume
Zoom G3
Morpheus Dive bomber
Dunlop 95Q
Guitar-any in my stable
5150 Cab (V30/Sheffield X-pat)

^His first bump was after 12 hours and his second bump was after 5 days so I don't see what the big deal is. If I had see his OP originally I probably would have jumped in to help.

I don't know anything about the RG200 but I am assuming it is all solid state (no I didn't look it up). Best thing to do is play both, and some others, and see what you like best.

amatas83 - had some good advice. You don't need a half stack to gig either. There is a good chance a VK112 would be plenty loud enough. If you do decide to get a VK there are some things you will probably want do right away to get the best tone possible. Tone wise, a new speaker and an EQ pedal will REALLY help this amp. An OD pedal too will be necessary for metal. If you did get the stack, don't get the VK cabinet. It just has 4 of the same crappy speaker.

There are other amps to look at too. If you give me your closest city I might be able to find something for you on craigslist if you are in the States.

Also, take a look at:
B52 AT112 = $370
Vypyr 60 = $450
Blackstar HT5 = $400
Randall RG50TC = $450ish
other stuff

well thanks for the help, I probably should have stayed around a little longer to wait for a reply.

I probably will go with the randall because I don't want to have to buy a bunch of extra stuff on top of a $900 amp, I don't know anything about tubes either, so I'll start slow before wasting money.

and thanks for the welcome. I've been coming here for over 4 years and never made an account.

oh, and I live in ohio. I guess the closest city would be Columbus, and that's about two hours away.

Welcome to UG.

Also AxSilentxLine, apart from the last line, I don't see any statements in the TS' post which suggested a bad attitude. I'd probably be bummed too if no one responded to my posts.

Also, while this might be a little late. I've tried the VK... and I personally didn't think it was quite the best amp for NWOBHM. It sounded a little flubbier than I'd have like my NWOBHM tone to be like.

No experience with the Randall tho.

Also, I don't think these are the best amps for Satch or Becker, but I think it'd be a good idea if you checked out the Krank Rev Jr Pro... its got a sufficiently modern metal voice for Metallica and Megadeth, while Dimebag used the Rev head for a while (also his signature Krankenstein is essentially a heavily modified Rev head).

With the OCD on 18 volt mode, my Krank Rev Jr really sparkles and can get a pretty decent instrumental tone.

those amps look pretty nice, and I'd prefer to have a mesa because they sound like they are reliable, but I work at a Speedway, and that's only pulling around $150 a week, so I was going to get a musicians friend card to make payments, but I might just save up to get something better.

my "band" plays the heavy stuff, I just play satch and becker when I'm bored.

In all honesty for ~$900 you could do much, much better than the Vk.

How about a used Mesa MkIII?

I agree with this.

Take time to shop around and research other potential amps since you're gonna save up now.
