I own a Yamaha FGX730SCA Acoustic-Electric guitar. I was told at Guitar Center that it would be difficult to install a strap button on the neck heel, so would it be safe to install it on the back of the guitar, into the neck block?

It shouldn't be difficult...

I admit, I have no reason for not trusting the GC tech, but...it looks normal. What reason did they give?

It should work, technically. I dont understand why you would need one though. Acoustic guitars don't come loose from the neck side. Only the bottom side comes loose, which unfortunately, you can't easily install strap locks.
