Hello

My good friend just picked up a 76' Fender Bassman Head for $1000 Australian (same price as a marshall mg over here), and its in near perfect condition and sounds so, so good.

Just of curiosity and amazement of how much he got it for, how much does UG reckon its worth?

As an aussie i can say that that is more than an MG, maybe if you got the MG250HDFX with a 4x12 than it would cost that.

Nevertheless that is an AWESOME deal, nice find. My guitar teachers store has MANY vintage fender amps bothe blackface and silverface and they usually go for a couple thousand. A blackface Deluxe Reverb that i asked about was 5000 so i would guess yours to be about 2500-4000 but i'm no expert so don't take this as gospel.

Wow, thanks i'l' let him know. And haha my music stores must be outrageous, they sell a Marshall MG 50 combo for $899 so i guessed the larger wattages would be around $1000 :P

Australian prices suck.

True and its still not comparable because the OP only got the a head and not a Head + Cab.

Still congratz on the purchase. I think your friend may have done alright considering the prices that are advertised at music swop shop.

I agree with this so much

Yesterday i bought Guitarist magazine to drool at the 6500 dollar Mesa Boogie Mark V i will never own. The only thing that made my lust for it increase was the rave reviews it got on every aspect.

I let out a mighty FML that day.

you can pick one up for ~$600 USD in America, which is... idk, ~$700 AUD? I guess you have to factor in that everything is more expensive in Australia but as far as the prices go here, I wouldn't really call it a great deal...

Considering a VK costs $1000 down there, I'd say it's a great deal.

Ya I don't know conversion rates or gear pricing over there, but I got a 1975/1976 for $200. It needed new tubes and capacitors but that wasn't the reason for the price. Unless he got an invoice from a tech saying it is in tip top shape, he shouldn't have payed that (again unless my conversion is way off.)

Anything after like 1972 is considered pretty undesirable, because of declining build quality, and later on (1975ish) the addition of UL transformers. That said, I absolutely love my 1975/1976 and so he should be very happy with the sound. He just may have trouble getting his money back when trying to sell.

Just out of curiousity you should ask if it is a Bassman, a Bassman 70, a Bassman 100, or a Bassman 135. I believe all of these were in production at that time. I'd be interested to hear more about this if you don't mind. Also the serial numbers used for 1975 and 1976 were the same, so how does he know it is a 1976?

I've taken a few offers on my Bassman, and even with new tubes, caps and a clean bill of health from a tech it seems people aren't willing to pay more than about $400-$500. Also I've seen a few go recently for around $300. Its a damn shame, because I got a great deal at $200, but servicing it put me above its value. I've never seen a VK on my CL, so I'm not sure, but I think that puts it still cheaper than the VK.

xe.com tells me:

1,000.00 AUD = 871.620 USD

New gear cost more though due to aussies ridiculous VAT tax.

Ya, so let's say that's $600 here, which I think is pretty conservative. That is too high, unless it is in perfect condition cosmetically and electronically. It could make a slight difference what model it is, but mostly negatively. If it is a 135 it is significantly less valuable.

well, it is a used amp, so VAT taxes wouldn't apply.

So unless I read something incorrectly, which happens all time, he paid $871 ins US dollars for that amp.

I think that tax translates onto the used market, from what I've heard anyway. Either way, I think he paid a little more than he will get out of it, but if he likes it, that isn't an issue.

bassman in my area go for $400-$800

Like I said before; Bassman 135s are the absolute low man on the totem pole for these. That guy won't get $400, unless he convinces someone it is a 'vintage fender' and they are all the same.
