I'm curious as to how many bands are able to build up a portion of a song, sometimes the same riff over and over again. Do you know what I mean? An example would be Franz Ferdinand's Take me Out during the decreasing tempo. So what techniques/idea do bands use to create powerful build-ups?

Crescendo
Accelerando
Dissonance
Modulation (relative major/minor) <quite fun

Just a few things that come to mind.

Listen to some post-rock and get some ideas. The genre is full of great rhythmic, dynamic, and compositional techniques.

Yep, post rock, post-metal; try some dance music e.g drum and bass, hard house, trance; Classical music is a must. The list probably goes on, but there is enough there to keep you going.
