Just pretend it's not a guitar....Nothing special about the electronics...

I would say take pictures first.
when you put the new switch in, you have a reference to be sure which wires go where.

Strat style guitars are about the easiest to repair and mod. Diagrams are available online in abundance for most wiring configurations, and the fact that you can just take off the pickguard and work away from the guitar makes it that much easier.

^yeah and like said by jon, you can get your diagram from the guitar.

you take a pic or draw it out, desolder the old switch add the new, solder and go.

a soldering iron kit is about $15 with instructions on the pack.

Jenny needs to sow her wild oats with random Gibsons and Taylors she picks up in bars before she settles down with a PRS.

You don't need to be removing any pots do you? Just unscrew the pickguard, flip it over, and voila.

But anyway, Easiest way to remove tone/volume knobs is to use an old guitar string. Put the string under the knob, and pull up on both ends of the string.
