i'm just a curious guitarist wondering if bassists use palm muting in their playing often

When you slap, you should try and incorperate palm muting. I got into the habit of just laying my fingers on my left hand over the strings and it gets in the way when your doing faster slapping.

Fingerstyle, sometimes i hit the strings with the side of my hand / fingers if i'm playing offbeat, not really palm muting but it deadens sound and if your treble's not up then it'll make minimal sound. Helps me keep the beat aswell.

I use it in my playing when I'm bored and pretending to be a guitarist.

Oh, and high up the neck, palm muting sounds pretty nice.

I dont mute usually, just when i play like guitarist or just have fun
Metal is like a apple, no-one likes the core.

Sometimes in jams i mute next to the fret but I've never used it in something I've actually written. I wouldn't say it's common but it can be done.

I use it a lot, palm mute, plucking with thumb and index, gives a nice thumpy funk tone.

http://www.bassplayer.tv/ go to Artist Features, check out Jerry Brooks. he uses this technique, and he's really good at it.

Pino Palladino does this as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TesSAq6uY34
Only play what you hear. If you don’t hear anything, don’t play anything.

ehh...I guess it depends on your playing style. I only use palm muting for slapping. Finger style I only use my left hand for muting

Depends on the song, and even then, usually only certain parts. Sometimes when I practice, I'll do it for a while, just because I feel like it.

I use right hand palm mute close to the bridge, it sounds pretty cool

Yeah I use some palm muting because I'm mainly a pick bassist and play metal so I like to incorporate it into my playing. +1 on the funk stuff too.
