So I have seen a few photos of people doing the old \m/ at some RnB thing (I think I was Taio Cruz or however it's spelt) and I was wondering if people think it is acceptable in other genres or if it should just be for rock/metal.

In that case, it's entirely acceptable.
And caring about it makes you different and strange, and will ensure you end your life lonely, unloved and unmourned.

if people want to do it then its their choice doesnt matter what they are listening to......

Much more entertaining to wave the Shocker around. I don't see why there's any reason to give a shit to be honest.

Ronny James Dio introduced it into metal. It's a profane Italian gesture he learnt from his grandma meaning something along the lines of "your partner's cheating on you".

I don't think it'd work well because everybody associates it with metal

I do it at pun shows, rockabilly shows, psychobilly shows, blues shows, RnB shows, the one rap show i went to... Yeah, i do it pretty much everywhere if i dig the music. When i play, it makes me get all "Whoo, some one likes it!" when i see somebody doing it, even if i'm not playing metal.

So, to me, yeah.

I just don't ever do it and therefore don't care, just seems really lame and cliché. Kinda embarrasing being around some people who do it about anyting and everything too, I find.

This question is best addressed to Ronnie James Dio. If it is Dio approved, it is acceptable. Actually, if anything is Dio approved, it is not only acceptable, but automatically awesome.
