In Black Label Society's "Life, Birth, Blood, Doom" he has such a crunchy, crackly tone in the beginning...what is that? I've been playing guitar for about 6 years and never come across an effects pedal that creates that sound.

distortion?

Sounds to be a combination of way to much distortion with bad EQing, and crappy recording.

"With CRUSHING Overdrive!"
BTW, sweet username. Tragic no one knows what "macabre" means anymore, let alone how to pronounce it...

But yeah, I agree with the fuzz and noise suppressor guess.

Haha. I hate my username. Turtle used to be a nickname of mine, and throwing in the macabre part (think "synister gates", sid "vicious" so on) was to make sure the same username would be available on everything.

Yeah, the guitar sounds like someone took a sledgehammer to the amp, partially cut the cables, and gave it a dying power supply.

The only effects that Zakk uses are a custom MXR ZW-44 overdrive, either a Boss chorus or an MXR M-134 stereo chorus (not sure which he's using these days), an MXR Phase 90, a Dunlop ZW-45 wah, and a Dunlop JD-4S Rotovibe. Can't really be too hard to pick out.

But like everyone else has said - that clip is just hella amounts of distortion.
