It means we were happy because they were supplying us with oil and did not look closer and see that even though they were giving us oil they were breeding terrorists.

It means that before, we were happy to ignore human rights violations as long as they gave us something (oil) in return. But now, we have to stick our noses in everyone business and be like, "yo dawg, Democracy FTW yo".
