so im gonna have about $600 soon and im needing some advice on what to buy, ive got a few things in mind but would like some more input

first ill start with my current gear, for amps i have a Marshall G30R CD for a practice amp and a Kustom wAv 210 for when im playing with a drummer. as for pedals ive got an octave pedal and a chorus pedal.

so i figured while i have this money i can upgrade my rig a little bit and get something decent to record with.

so should i get a new amp (i was thinking the blackheart little big giant halfstack) and a mic to record with (dont really know much about mics or what would be a decent one)
and then i would have a little money left over to maybe get a pedal or 2.

or should i spend the majority of the money on setting up a pedalboard and then get a mic or a micro BR recorder to get some basic recordings done?

ohh, and i play blues, alot of rock, and some metal (nothing to heavy though)

I have a boss br 900, you can make pretty good recordings with it.. but i cant seem to make a good lead tone that's not noisy...
notice that I bought it on july and still hadnt time to tweak it...
I still hadnt tried miccing my amp and plugging into it...

anyway, I think its better getting a good amp and mic.
for mic go with a sm 57 or copy

get a new amp

What kind of tone are you looking for??

As far as mics go - the Shure SM-57 is pretty much the staple mic for recording instruments.

i play alot of SRV, acdc, black sabbath, GnR, eric clapton, and bb king.

so i would like something that could do alot of tones fairly well

New, you could look at a Peavey Classic 30 or Valveking. Maybe a Blackstar HT-5. Maybe a Fender Blues Jr - although I don't know how well it would do Sabbath. I like the hybrid tube Vypyr 60 too. Lots of amp models in there.

Alternatively, you could look at used amps. I see some great deals out there not too far from you. With some of these, you have monies left over for some pedals (like OD or EQ) a microphone, etc.

Peavey Classic 50 $500

Vox AC15 $450 (not sure on the Sabbath part)

Blackheart 5w $250 (no cleans basically but might work perfectly for you)

Mesa Boogie Subway Blues $300

Line 6 Flextone II with floorboard $300 (built in effects)

Vox Valvetronix AD120VT combo $500 (built in effects)

Crate V1512 $133 (not a bad little amp, will need an OD pedal)

Marshall JCM2000 DSL401 $600
http://chattanooga.craigslist.org/msg/1372215888.html

Fender HRD 40w $495 (may struggle with higher gain, use OD)

Peavey Valveking, new 12AX7 tubes and footswitch $350

Crate V50 new tubes (offer $300 maybe)

Laney AOR 30 full stack $700 (rare, maybe just get 1 4x12)

ok, im thinking of getting an amp but im still working out all my options since i might decide to keep my current amp setup. i will get the shure SM-57 for recording (cheaper then the micro BR, and i will be able to record drums and vocals with it to.

so that leaves me about $480 left to get pedals with if i decide to not get an amp.

im pretty much set on getting a Big Muff Pi Wicker, but not sure what else to get, i know i want to get a wah pedal (i was thinking the Vox V847A wah) and i was thinking about getting an EQ pedal and maybe a compression pedal.

any suggestions on types of pedals i should get instead of a compression or EQ pedal, or which compresser and EQ i should get? (the MXR 10 band EQ seems to be a favorite around here so im thinking of going with it)

You're going to regret not buying a new amp, ESPECIALLY if you plan on moving into recording demos, songs, etc.

A good program can make a crappy amp sound good, but a good amp to begin with will leave you with less work later.

Granted, I'm a big fan of Kustom, but even here, just listen to 311.

He's got it pretty much covered. You'll be wanting that amp instead of that equipment later on.

A mic alone won't allow you to record. And you're going to want to get a new amp because honestly, the MG30 is a buzzy piece of ****. The pedals, particularly compressor and EQ won't do much on it. The Big Muff would't sound very good and personally I don't think the MG takes wahs very good. I'd go with one of 311's suggestions.

EDIT: Also, I don't really like that Kustom. I strongly recommend a new amp.

Once again you do waaaay too much work for your own good

Any of those suggestions are good, and if I were you I'd sell at least one of your amps so you can extend your budget a bit.

Ha. Thanks. I actually enjoy doing it. Keeps me in touch with the used market and I like helping people anyway. I started off making amp mistakes because I wasn't a member here to have someone show me the way. So I sometimes go out of my way to help others because I don't want people to make some of the same mistakes I did.

so which one would you recomend, the little giant half stack, or the HT5? (those were the main two i was looking before i started asking around) or would you recomend a differnt amp (im wanting to go new on the amp, i dont want to risk spending most of my money and then the amp going out the next day )

EDIT: thanks for all the help 311ZOSOVHJH
