Hi guys, I'm giving a speech tomorrow persuading people to take care in the music they listen to and reach deeper into it to see it as art more than just noise to fill car rides.

I'm pretty much going to tear down commercialistic music and give examples of bands that don't have integrity and only exist to be rich rockstars. I'm looking at AC/DC (you know its true, look at that most recent album, half the songs have the word "rock" in the title and its all just a pentatonic riff over emotionally unattached words.) 'Lil Wayne, and the like.

I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions, I've already got what I want to do in mind but I want some input here to see if I'm missing anything. Any other examples of blatantly commercial bands, or bands that have huge integrity despite being considered mainstream? I'm already going with the chili peppers and Blink 182 for their total honesty in lyrics and the show.

Your argument failed here. Start over. Blink 182 especially are one of the biggest sellouts in history.
Like punk the way it used to be? Deranged Youth Its like what Warped Tour should be!

it's all everyone's own personal opinions.

I don't agree with what you said but that doesn't make it wrong, it just means it's not true for everyone.

You can't say Lil Wayne's lyrics aren't musically attached to the music because to the people that like him, they are.

NAO.

sorry for double post
but really defineing musical integrity is somewhat impossible, every band and artist has their own integrity their songs are crafted out of there creativity and with that comes there own integrity, i meen **** i hate lil wayne and all that new hip hop ****ing bull**** but they do have their own integirty to a certain extent to say an artist has no integrity is somewhat impossible, somewhere along the lines integrity gets lost (hinder) usually by the music label (major labels) trying to make hits, thats where you get all that auto-tuner lil wayne bull**** from, the artist himself may have the integrity, but look beyond the artist into the industry

How would you know if a band that makes "blatantly commercial" music is really doing it because of the money? It's commercial because a majority of people like it and are willing to buy it, and it's reasonable that out of those people who like commercial music, more than a few will become musicians who make music that sounds like the commercial music that they like.

If you don't like "A Milli" or whatever, you're not going to like him. He does venture into pop-rap style stuff sometimes, but he always does it better than anyone else. I mean, if you can't give him that, then admit you're biased in your own ways.

There are plenty of freestyles he's done that you probably haven't heard that would change your mind, try YouTube or Google Video, I'm sure there are some examples of what he used to....**** that. He still does, his non sequitors and literary techniques are plentiful nowadays. He's always been good.

1st: You fail pretty hard.

2nd: When your 16 or 17, all you want is noise to fill car rides.

3rd: Lil' Wayne has songs with some very moving lyrics. Do research and listen before you pick someone mainstream and say they just want money.

4th: Blink 182? Seriously?

btw Sonic Youth are officially the most artistically integrity-full (new word i no) artists of all time.

Hehe, it's a shame that doesn't necessarily make them the BEST band of all time (although I am a fan).

To TC, go for arctic monkeys, they're paraded around as the original generic indie band and yet they've made some of the most lyrically and musically deep popular music of recent years. Also, if you happen to be a guy in your mid to late teens living in the UK, it should be pretty relevant stuff.

You forgot about the house,
You forgot about the ring,
I remember everything,
I just wanna hear you sing,
I remember the love, right after the fights
You cant tell me you dont remember those nights
And if I would cry, then you would cry twice
To me you are the brightest thought of the sunlight
See take away my title, take away my strength, you gimmie back my girl, then you gimmie back my life
Gimmie back my girl, then you gimmie back my life
See this is just a nightmare so ill blink twice
Open up my eyes hoping she'll be in my sight
I remember the times I wish I can bring it back
What she means to me is what I mean to rap

tbh it depends on how you see musical integrity. i mean almost all songs could be seen as having integrity as almost all songs relate to real life experiences. it just depends on how you want to judge the way the artist portrayed those emotions or experiences. its more about whether the artist feels and believes in what theyre portraying, and tbh you cant really judge that.
#35
I can't imagine anything instrinsically without integrity in a piece of music. Sure, some musicians clearly lack intergrity, but their music is still just sound that we might have an enjoyable reaction to.

holy **** I left my thread unattended. I definately should have thrown in that I know its next to impossible to touch this subject without being an elitist prick, but the speech is full of "in the end listen to whatever you want" disclaimers.

To all the blink haters out there, you are wrong, songs like first date are a great example of honesty in lyrics. And they put on really fun shows that feel more like parties where everyone's singing and they just happen to be louder, than a show. Only people who have been to one of their shows is allowed to comment on this.

to above me, does he? though, I should have clarified that I was more going after how much he uses auto tune in his music. To the point that its almost a trade mark. I don't say this to say, "oh rap sucks, he can't sing" nope, I mean, he's riding a gimmick in that case.

AC/DC can't be argued with, its the definition of shallow music. but in the end, if you enjoy it, go for it.

The biggest thing I'm using to define integrity comes from a quote from the guitarist from Underoath. they take a lot of flaming on here so I'm not gonna argue underoath, but like them or not, he puts it well.

"When you listen to a record and say, 'They're not worried about radio, the industry, they're not worried about pleasing parents, girlfriends, wives, fans, anyone, they're just doing what they do, I think thats one of the most special things about music."

Judging music based on integrity is wholesale assbaggery.

I'm very interested in the topic that you are attacking, but you are failing at the argument.

I've written a few research papers on the topic of how commercialism has ruined music, and I severely dislike how you're going about it.

If you want to exemplify how commercialism in music is ruining the industry, don't look at the chili peps! Cmon! And blink? I may not like them but they've been around a long time, just because they are popular and modern does not mean they are a good example of commercialism in music.

Jonas Brothers. Lady Gaga. Look for bands that get one hit wonders and disappear, and their songs are on their radio for a matter of weeks and then disappear. Look for people that are popular because they have physical beauty, and get endorsement from Disney or Warner Bros in order to make them absurd amounts of money.

ACDC is also a horrible example. It's just their style; it's fun music, people like to hear pumping up blues rock.

RHCP and Blink are horrible examples. RHCP is one of the only modern bands that I think will survive through the fray, I can even see them becoming Led Zeppelin status in 15-20 years. Blink is popular, yes, but they've been around a long time and they've worked to get to the top.

Just rethink your ****.
