As many of you know, I have been a staunch supporter of the SS amp, and believed that the player dictated the majority of his tone. I wasnt all wrong, just somewhat. Whatever man, I love this thing. Went patroling the pawns today and stumbled across a sweet deal on a great amp. I wanted a great Metal Amp, I looked and looked, and looked, and tried damn near everything. I thought once that Id get a Classic 30 and pair it up with an OD, but this is so much better for my needs.

Its a bit darker than Im used too, but I love it. Its the rawest, nastiest, chunkiest metal I've heard in a long time. Just so you know it was a deal....Here's a shot of the Pawn Recipt.

Did a little haggling.

My wife bought me a funny looking cat when she was away once. He's been my amp buddy for some time now. And yes, that is a funky bowl that I keep all my picks in.

Current rig shot. I didnt get a cabinet, yet. I like the old Fender one that I have. The Emminence Speakers sound damn good. This has a good shot at the mighty mighty pedal board. I still need to pick up a footswitch, and perhaps an attenuator for when im not on stage, or maybe even then too.

What do you guys think? Pretty good for my first tube amp? If not, what would you have done with your two hundred eighty?

i used to be a mod, then i took an arrow in the knee.

Great find man HNAD! You definitely stole it for that price.
If you start a reply with: I have never played one but I have heard good things about it! Your opinion is invalid.

Peavey 5150, THE death metal amplifier, I am quite envious to be honest. Always wanted one of those block-letter 5150s. And at $280? What a steal!

Stock peavey speakers are crap anyways, if you do decide to get a 5150 cab, try to find one that isn't loaded.

So what did you do with your FM100 or whatever it was?

or MH100 I forget

Sold to a buddy of mine that fell in love with the clean channel. He'll either gut it, or build a 2X12 speaker cab and run it in an A/B switch setup. He likes the blistering cleans. I fell in love with the breakup.

Good one. I got luckey, plain and simple. The old man running the joint didnt know squat. Thats Rural ass Texas for you. Sometimes you win, most times you lose. Ive been going to the pawns for the better part of a year now and this is one of a few deals Ive seen. I remember seeing an Epi Blues Custom for 300 once, passed on that. Seems like a good thing now.

A close friend of mine was telling me a while back that he saw a Gibson SG standard in a pawn shop for $300 - sometimes people don't have any idea what they are selling

Real.

But it goes both ways. In one of the bigger Pawns there was a Signature by Gibson SG, bolt on neck, nicks, cuts, paint missing. I thought it would be fun to beat the hell out of and do some custom work on, for cheap, you know. Tag had 399$ on it. They sell brand new for less than 150 in Hastings. I could have haggled, but I just didnt care. Cymbals here are damn high, 80-110 for a beat up starter crash! (and I mean damn near destroyed)

But every now and then, at the mom and pop joints, you just get lucky. Ive seen a Epi casino for cheap, a few USA Strats under 400 in good condition. Shoot you name it, I'll bet I could "West Texas" price it.

They should have cut my hands off for stealing. But what are you gonna do? It was this 5150 or I could spent 400 on the Spider valve HD 100? Remember that little fiasco with ZZ Sounds!!

Not that the S. Valve head dosent have its guts, its a damn fine piece of amp-ery, if thats even a word. But I fell in love with this guy, it seems my haggling, or thier lack of knowledge, or both, was in full effect when the planets aligned today.

The pawn had it listed at 399, and I told the guy I didnt think it was worth that much. It was so dirty, you could have caiught and STD from this thing in thier store. Tolex was beat up, there was a hole in the top grill. They didnt usually deal in amps, and the old guy running the place had no idea what it was.

I offered 300, and walked out when the refused. Im starting up my car when one one of the emloyees comes out and tells me that thell sell at 300, I felt like I was in car dealership.I worked out the other 50$ when they wouldnt take my FM100 in trade, saying "Well what I am I supposed to do with this one?"

The pawn was afraid of losing the deal, so he offered me 280$ out the door.

Sweet deal, great amp! Congrats. Its funny, though, I don't think your cleans improved at all, but your overdrive certainly did.

Truthfully, no. The Fender Frontman 100 has one of the best clean channels I've heard on a SS rig. Crisp, bright, and warm. If the 5150 had a shared EQ I could do some damage with the cleans, but alas, I will have to keep using my seven band.

All in all the cleans on the Peavey arent bad, they arent Fender Blackface cleans, but then we knew that.

And yes, the Overdrive on this thing is a thing of beauty. 120w of pure tonal bliss and brutal blistering blood curdiling distortion.

Haha... at that steal, I doubt he'd have any right or reason to complain at all.

Damn... That's like £175. You're a lucky son of a gun... I wish I could teleport to the US, buy an amp there, and teleport back. I'd have so many more options.
