I need to get an amp head (40w minimum) and cab. I play hard rock, heavy metal, and I'm starting to play technical. My budget for both (and some pedals also) is $1500. I might be able to swing $1700-$1800.

**Edit: Tube, no solid state. No Spider or Bugera.
**Edit: I thought maybe I should specify the type of music I play within those genres that are pretty broad. Everything from Black Sabbath through Iron Maiden, Opeth, and Symphony X.

Pedal suggestions?

I have been looking at these:
Boss Blues Driver (tired of borrowing my roommates)
Boss Noise Suppressor
Boss Compression Sustainer
Boss Metalzone/Metalcore
Boss 7 band EQ
Boss Octave 3

Thoughts for amp head and cab? Pedals?

EHX Metal Muff rather than the Boss metal pedals.

^if you get a decent enough head...you won't need a distortion pedal

Here's a few worth looking into that I found on the Boston CL...

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/msg/1398721302.html (not a huge fan of the Spider Valve, but )

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/msg/1397892185.html (decent amps for the money)

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/msg/1406613929.html (shoot a lower offer, do the tubes yourself)

http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/msg/1406113850.html (ehh...)

EDIT: also keep an eye out for Peavey JSX/XXX/Ultra heads. They're perfect for what you're looking for.

For pedals, I wouldn't limit yourself to BOSS.

Boss are the only pedals I have used before. What other brands are good?
For more affordable pedals, there's Electro Harmonix, MXR, Danelectro, Marshall, Digitech, but there's tons more higher end pedals if you look into those.

dont get a distortion pedal
look for a marshall dsl 2000, a peavey xxx, a jcm800 plus a boost, an 800 kk, a mesa mark iii, and maybe a 6505 (not plus) if you dont care about cleans.
for cabs, something closed back with v 30s or g12100s, like a marshall 1960 vintage, avatar, mesa boogie, and suprisingly the egnater.
maybe a vader depending on what head you get
ill look on cl

Cleans meaning clean tones? A good clean tone is very important. I play a lot of undistorted stuff.
