this pretty much. although, i think everyone that complains about the cleans is actually playing at like gig volume. i play mine at bedroom volume and i love the cleans (its no fender, but for how much i actually play clean, its not bad by any means). another problem may be is im sure a lot of people play with scooped mids, and cleans dont like scooped mids (which sucks for the 5150 I, cause it only has 1 eq for both channels).

u can probably talk him down a little, although idk how much those tubes may have cost.

I thought the classic Fender clean sound was mid scooped?

It is... No offense but he has no idea what he is talking about. If anything 5150s cleans are most tolerable when played loud, so at least they have some punch. Also I never said they were utterly unusable, I just meant that if cleans are important to you this is not the amp for you. If your distorted tones are the most important but you'd like OK cleans then it'll do fine.

No problem, that is a pet peeve of mine for some weird reason...

Anyway good luck with the amp, it sounds like you've made an educated decision. If you can talk him down to around $450-$500 then that would be a pretty good deal $600 is around average for those, maybe even a bit high.

Yeah the guy I bought mine from claimed it had been retubed, and it has Ruby 6L6GCMSTR's in the power section and JJ Tesla ECC83S's in the preamp.

i only said what i said cause i play at low volumes and no problems with my cleans, so i figured most people hate the cleans cause most people have this as a gigging amp (meaning used at mostly high volumes). and when i scoop the mids, it gets kinda twangy, which may or may not be a desirable clean effect. im not really into cleans so i dont know if most people consider that twang as a better clean.
