Hi, UG. I've been playing for somewhere around 5 years. Currently, I've got a low end Gibson SG (thinking of swapping out the stock pickups) and a BOSS GT-10.
I'm looking for an amp for somewhere between $1000 and $1500 Canadian (I'm from Vancouver). I could possibly save up to $2000.
I'd like to go for a tone like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Randy Rhoads, Guns N' Roses, or Led Zeppelin. I'd also like to be able to play clean or with a little bluesy crunch. I typically play lead.
I don't currently have a band, but if I'm spending 1-2k on an amp, I don't want to have to replace it any time soon, so I want something I can play clubs with.
I'm slightly wary of buying a used amp, as I'm a gear noob, and don't want to get ripped off or have to deal with maintenance problems, but I would if I knew it was a good deal.
Thanks for the help!

Splawn heads seem to cost $2k, and the cabs cost around $500 plus tax, shipping, and dollar conversion. This appears to be out of my price range. What's so special about splawn?

Look on ebay for Splawns, I know they go for like $1000. I don't know anything about them but 311 does, wait for him.

splawns are essentially hot rodded marshalls, which is kind of the tone you're looking for.

I have a feeling they're going to cost a little more in Canada.

Splawn pretty much gives you that vintage Marshall tone, but does a better job than modern production Marshalls (and they're cheaper).

I can give you more info on the Splawns if you are interested. They are kinda rare so they may be hard to find. They are basically a modded Marshall Plexi and JCM800 in one box with a decent clean channel.

Here is some other stuff I found on your craigslist. All posted in the last week or so. I'd be going after some of this stuff if I were you. They may not be exactly what you are looking for but will maybe give you an idea of stuff to look for. There were quite a few Traynors which I also recommend for what you want, and they are made in Canada so may be a better value.

Good luck.

From the man with the Budda avatar. Biased much??

TS: Listen to 311, he knows his stuff when it comes to Splawn amps - he honestly wouldn't recommend you one if he didn't think that it would really suite your needs.

Budda Superdrive 30. Carvin MTS. Carvin V3 (though you'll want a nice pedal for lighter drive sounds). Marshall JCM800. H&K Duotone. I believe there are also some ENGLs worth looking at for you, but I'm not sure how much they run up in Canada.

If you want to save, you can look at Peavey Classics.

Does anyone have any advice about buying used gear? Like how to not get ripped off?

Is it true that with Marshall amps, you're partly paying for the brand name, or is that just MG's?

With almost any brand you're paying for part of the brand name. You just can't avoid that.

Some brands you probably do not end up paying for brand name are... Crate... I think that's it.

you don't really pay for Bugera's name since they're essentially a ripoff already

The Marshall 'premium' is most evident at the retail level. For the tube amps you are paying for the name and costs of manufacturing in England (vs China for lower priced competitors).

In the used market I don't think you pay a premium because there are usually quite a few for sale and that makes prices competitive. You won't see amps like Splawn or ENGL used in Vancouver too often and when you do they are usually pricey.

As for not getting ripped it is basically 'try before you buy.' Make sure the seller will let you spend some time with it. If they just want to meet you in a parking lot somewhere then pass.

I think all of Marshall's equipment gets made outside of England now. I was told it by Matamp who used to equip the same transformers as Marshall.

That is possible for more recent gear but I do know that my JCM2000 and 1960 cab say made in England.

Someone I know who has made a living playing clubs/busking reccomended that I don't buy a halfstack because they're just too big and play at a higher volume than I need. Any opinions on this matter? I've heard that I can buy something to make a tube amp sound like you're playing it at high volume while it's low.

Yeah, that's called an attenuator. They're not that cheap though, have a look around the forum, there's a lot of info about them. I don't know much about them, personally.
