anybody know how to change the bitrate of an mp3? I want to upload my recording, but the mp3 is running at 256 kbps, instead of the 128 kbps that the uploader requests

Download audacity and you can export the mp3 at a new bitrate.

in itunes, in preferences, change the import settings to 128 kbps MP3 NOT AAC

Then select the song, right click, and it should say somewhere "creat mp3 version" or something to that effect. Click that.
