Seen tonnes of overrated movies threads, time for books. Yes, I searched.

Personally, I think 1984 is the most overrated book ever. Everyone raves about how good it is and how much it makes you think and blah blah blah. I found it to be very monotonous and boring, and struggled to finish it.

I agree, Brave New World was far more satisfying than 1984 in terms of dystopian fiction.

I enjoyed 1984 and Brave New World both very much, but as stated earlier, I found The Catcher in the Rye to be a huge disapointment. I think its because Holden is just such a whiny prick...

Ayn Rand is over-rated. Objectivism = making people feel better about being selfish c*nts. Oh, and while we're at it, The Wealth of Nations can go die in a fire as well.

Edit - ^ You're just a gboddamn phony

+1

Island was also quite good, though practically the opposite of Brave New World's setting.

Anything by Dan Brown, Heart of Darkness, The Sound and the Fury.

And yeah I think 1984 and Orwell are brilliant. Sorry.

That's silly. It's overrated, sure, but it isn't bad.

Lord of the Rings. I just couldn't handle it. SOOOOO boring. Tolkien could have cut out half of the ****, the boring talk about nothing important and made it shorter, and people would still probably call it a masterpiece. There was too much crap that no one wants to sit through in those books.

He should have made it more like The Hobbit, which was awesome.

Endless hordes of tween girls? The series somehow has a ridiculous rabid fanbase.

For poorly-disguised Mormon propaganda, yeah.

I don't really consider it overrated, though. If anything, the type of people who like it are a very clear indication of its quality.

I kind of agree about 1984. The setting was interesting, but it was nothing much I hadn't thought of myself, and the story itself wasn't too interesting.

The fact that people actually pay money for it makes it overrated for me.

1984 was depressing and anticlimactic...I hated it, honestly. Well-written, but definitely from another time.
