Think it' my first time posting here so here it goes!

I need to start searching for a new amp head and cabinet ideal for gigging with my band.

I really don't have any experience with various makes although i have heard a few that have caught my ear.

At the moment i own a line 6 spider II 75 watt. Planning on selling it. Don't get me wrong it has done me well although the clean tone is terrible and the distortion is wayyyy to digitalised. Took me a year or two to find my ear for these kind of things lol!

I usually play stuff like August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying and Protest the Hero.

I'v heard good things about Mesa, Peavey and Krank..what do you guys think?

Not really sure on my price range..let's just say £7-800ish

If it helps my main guitar is an ESP LTD DJ600

Thanks guys hope you can help.

Well is 800 the absolute highest price range?? because in your first thing you said "lets say" which to me sounds like your guessing.. & no it's not to low.. depends if yeh want solid state or tube amp.. k well it is low i mean to say.. but there is a small selection in that range.. but not a big selection.. like you would be EXTREMLY lucky if yeh found a mesa in that price range..

I think if yeh raised your range you could get a krank amp.. there good.. for metalcore

Are Krate tube amps?

Which would you guys say are more ideal for metalcore? Tube or solid state?

I'v heard about hyprid amps too, both solid state and tube?

Hybrids are a bit of a gimmick. I have one of the Vox ones and it's a bit better than some solid states but definately nowhere near as good or powerful as all tube

Could you guys link me some good amp models? Naming a brand is a bit vague, no offense lol. Like i said im inexperienced

Right now, Peavey's 6505+ rules the roost for massive gain amplifiers. It has six 12AX7 preamp tubes, which is what gives it phenomenal gain. I have yet to meet a dedicated metal guitarust who didn't like it. Paired with its matching 4x12 cabinet, it qualifies as a weapon of mass destruction.

Mesa and Krank amplifiers are also first-rate. Mesa's Rectifier sound is legendary among high-gain fanatics. Unfortunately, Mesa amplifiers are very expensive. Krank amplifiers are aimed specifically at metal players, with the late Dimebag Darrell as their main endorser. As with Mesa, they aren't cheap, but they sound great.

If price were no object, the ultimate Metalcore amplifiers are made by a small company called Diamond. Their cheapest amplifier head is their highest gain model, the Nitrox. It has enough gain to rend human flesh, it's freakishly loud, and the tone is second to none. Unfortunately, it sells for about US$2000.00. And remember, that is the inexpensive one! Their flagship Spec Ops Model amplifier head costs almost US$4000.00. Starving musicians need not apply.

Blackstar has a new line of high-gain amplifiers aimed at the metal set called the Series One. I haven't tried one, though. I tried one of their Artisan Series amplifiers and it was nothing short of phenomenal. Blackstar amplifiers tend to cost about the same as comparable Marshall amplifiers.

Hybrid amplifiers are great for high-gain metal tones, but the best ones don't come cheap. Randall makes a few, and Marshall still lists their powerhouse Mode Four on their website, though I haven't seen one for sale new in a long time. I have a Mode Four, and it is loud enough to level the neighborhood. Since a master volume amplifier overdirves the preamp stage, hybrid amps use a tube preamp for the gain and a solid state power amp for the headroom. These hybrids are becoming more and more popular among metal guitarists.

Crate made an all-tube 120-watt head called the Blue Voodoo, but I don't know if they still make it. Most of their recent tube amps have been combos of low RMS power that sounded, in my opinion, a bit shrill.

If high-gain is what you are looking for and you are on a budget, look at the solid-state Marshall MG series and the digital modeling amplifiers from Line 6. Tube amp purists sneer at these, but solid-state amplifiers have come a very long way since the 70's. I know. I was there. It was ugly.

Good luck with your search!

For metalcore look into:

Peavey 5150/6505
Ampeg VH-140c
Ashdown Fallen Angel
Krank Krankenstein

There's more out there but its 4am and I can't really think straight.
#12
Bleh, I would stay away from the Krankenstein. If you do go Krank, check out the Rev series. Good stuff fo sho. Just make sure that you try one out first... very love em or hate em.
#13
Hmmm the Peavey 5150/6105 looks promising

Used:
Peavey JSX/XXX/Ultra
Peavey 5150/6505

New:
Bugera 333
Bugera 6262
B-52 AT100

As far as cabs go...I'd just avoid Peavey altogether. They're notorious for lacking low-end.

Was looking at Peavey reviews, kinda dissapointed about the muddy clean tone

I need something with a balanced distortion and clean tone.

I got my XXX for $400 used...

for cabs check out Marshall 1960s, Mesas, Orange, Framus, etc. Something with Celestions V30s would be great. I play my XXX through a V30 mesa cab...great metalcore sound, plus amazing cleans.

yes

BTW the XXX is discontinued. the new Peavey 3120 might be in your budget but i wont go with that since you MIGHT afford an ENGL "Ball series" or an H&K Switchbalde with 800 pounds

I want to keep my budget under £1000 hopefully.

I can get a 100 or so from my ****ty spider II

I think i may go for the XXX and orange cab.

Thanks for the suggestions WTF but they're a little too pricey for my budget.

You think I'm making the right decision?

[EDIT]

I may be able to push to a 4x12 orange cab rather than a 2x12.

So that's £505(800USD), for BOTH the head AND cab?

I can't get my head round that sorry

If you can find me a deal like that within the UK I'll marry you.
