i bought a yamaha Yamaha RBX270 and play through line 6's podfarm and it sounds great through their distortion effects.
and its in ur price range.

In the 300-400 range you have Squier Vintage Modified Series and Deluxe Series, both of which are brilliant. General rule for getting a bass: Avoid no name brands and guitar to bass 'ports' as they usually are crap.
