I just got an email from this guy informing me that he's selling a marshall and mesa cabinet, but he wants me to offer the price.

How high (or low) should I start off the price?

thaaanks :]

edit:

i think it's a 1960B and a rectifier cab.

What kind of Marshall & what kind of cab?

doh, i totally forgot.

i think the marshall's a 1960B 4x12 cab, and the mesa's a 4x12 rectifier.

I forgot they were cabs. I thought they were heads for some reason.
How about 400 each?

$300 for the Marshall and $400 for the Mesa are the average prices out here. I'd never pay $1000 for those to cabs, no way.

The 1960's are decent cabs but have horrible resale value. I'd offer him $700, maybe $750 at the most.

Start at 600, then go to 650 if he rejects. If he rejects that, go to 700... try bargaining with him... may get a better price.

This sig is colored just to annoy the UG classic users.

Trying to think of witty things to put in my sig. Message if you have ideas.

I'd say $650, and then meet him at $700.

bahahaha!

thanks guys, but I'm not buying them both. I just want to know what I should offer him for each amp separately.

I'll offer him 300 for the marshall and 350 for the mesa. I'll see how it goes from there, and I'll keep yall updated.

btw why do cabs have such terrible resale value? :|

Most of the cabs I see that are going cheap are in rough shape. Like, I paid $600CAD for my '85 JCM800 slant but it's in better condition than most of the new 1960's sitting up my local Marshall dealer. If I'd wanted to get one with some road wear I could have picked something up for less than $400.

Also, keep in mind that most of the people on here wouldn't have the balls to offer what they're suggesting you should...

I always low ball people. It never works though. I'll even do it when I'm not looking for something just to see what kind of deal I could get if I did want it.

well i got this other guy selling a 1960av down to 270, but he sold it before i even got my amp.

I see a lot of these cabs for for 300-400, so I don't think offering a price like that isn't terribly bad at all.

I guess it's good I live in a state where more than half the people who post on CL can't even spell "cymbal" right. Means I can intimidate them with my ejamacation

Everyone here knows exactly what they have. It's no fair. But typically they already have it for a decent price so not much would be lost if I went ahead and bought something. I did get my TS808 for $300 and I flipped it a week and a half ago for $500 though. Then I went and bought a used reissue yesterday for $120. Sucks for the guy who bought it.

the austin craigslist always has stuff thats priced at normal used levels. usally no real big steals, but from time to time they appear. I spend my diffy Q class scouring austin cL for deals so lol

I browse about once every week or two and manage to find a few. But once I start I can't stop until I get to the last point I saw. There were deals left and right about a year ago but ever since they said the downturn was over they've dissapeared for the most part.

Most people I see selling Mesa cabs want way too much. Although I did get offered a Recto 2X12 for $200 last week.

I'd love to find a recto 2x12 on my local CL. Right now all there is are a couple of recto 1x12's that the dude wants $350/each for and I'm not gonna pay that much.

Few months back Recto cabs were selling for like $600-700 here on CL, but now they're like $400 max. Weird.

When I got mine, it was when they were worth more, I traded my 1960 and $50 for it

Now I see 1960s at like $250 quite regularly. Makes me feel sorry for the suckers at Guitar Center who buy brand new MG cabs when they can get the 1960 for cheaper

You don't need to spend more than $400 for a cabinet. If he seems unresonable, tell him how you feel. Usually honestly will work wonders in that kind of situation.

But again, anyone that knows anything will try to sell high and buy low, so you must do your part in that. If he will not go low enough, just wait. There is no reason to rush it and waste your money. Unless of course you REALLY want the cabs!

I've seen em go for under $200. And to think my friend paid $550 for his H&K cab.
