Which stack would be a better buy?

Randall RX120RH / $650
Line 6 Spider IV HD150 / $650
Marshall MG4 MG100HFX / $650

Or is there any other stack that has great clean tone, great distortion, and is good for metal that I can get for under $800?

Why must it be a stack? All of those aren't very good, with the Spider being the worst possible choice at that price point.

i've heard good things about the new mg series...but i have no experience with the Randall.
DEFINITELY NOT the spider

^The new MG series are an improvement but there's no way in hell I'd buy one for anything other than practice. A half stack MG has always and always will be fucking retarded. I have no experience with the Randall.

i think you can get a used metal combo for $800 that would be just as loud as a halfstack and would be much better than the amps listed,

look for Peaveys or a used Marshall JCM combo

welll im going to recommend none of those. just because ive found them to be sub-par.

BUT. I will recommend for that price range:
Peavey Valveking + Pedal
Peavey Windsor + Pedal
or a good combo.

Seriously, you really dont NEED a halfstack, i found that out the hard way myself as im sure many UG'ers have too. You will get better tone out of a combo for that price...BECAUSE good combos compared to halfstacks at $800 have better sounds, because half stacks are obviously more expensive.
So dude, get a combo of some sorts, get some pedals and you will thank me later.
Peace out.

If you must get a head and cab, look on eBay for the following:

1. Peavey Ultra Plus
2. Crate GT3500H Shockwave
3. Ampeg VH140c
4. Ampeg SS140c
5. Peavey XXX
6. Peavey VTM
7. Peavey Ultra
8. Red Bear MK60
9. Sovtek MIG
10. Peavey Butcher

And then an Avatar or Vader 2x12.

anyone else getting sick of recommending low-end amps for metal? i am.

out of those 3 i would recommend you the Line 6 to be honest. if you play with the settings it can get halfway decent, whereas in my opinion the randall cannot do cleans of any variety, and the MG is just... well it's an MG. I would highly suggest you keep your options open and look for some different amps. in this price range i would strongly recommend that you just go for the combo and not the half stack. its pointless to have the half stack just for the sake of it being a half stack. In this price range you could go out and buy a used Mesa Boogie Blue Angel which covers all the areas you listed and then some.

I got my XXX (with brand new JJ Tubes and custom python tolex even) and Avatar 2x12 for 800. So something similar would be good for the TS.

Except for the fact it doesn't have a Master Volume.
