Alright guys,

I'm looking for a new head, nothing over 100 watts, budget is $1500. I've got an Avatar 2x12 Traditional Cab with Vintage 30s in it.

I'm looking for a pop rock/pop punk whatever you want to call it tone. That means: Green Day, Sum 41, Paramore, Good Charlotte, Blink, etc. BUT I also want it to be able to do classic rock tones, and have decent cleans (2 channels).

I've been looking into Mesa Dual Recs, what do you guys think? Will that suit me well for what I want? I know Josh Farro (Paramore) has a JCM 2000 and a Dual Rec, but I'm not sure which one he uses more. And I've heard that Sum 41 has used JCM 2000s before too.

Help me out guys! Thanks in advance!

I've just heard that it's not good for what the price is. I could obviously change the tubes if that's going to make a big difference like I've heard it does, but I want to figure out all my options here, $1500 can get me a lot.

JCM900>DSL in my opinion, but I would try them first if I were you. You could also get a Randall RM100 with SL+ module, Clean module, and a Plexi module for less than $1500. The MTS series is pretty cool; I would check it out if you're not familiar with it.

^i second the randall RM. do it naow.

plus, if you ever decide you don't like your tone as much, you can just trade modules and swap tubes, and your amp will make a huge difference in sound, as opposed to selling it altogether for a totally different amp...which i see as a bigger hassle.

It may not have the grit you're looking for that you'd get from a Marshall, but before I made the purchase I'd try an Orange Rocker 30 anyways. These Orange heads have just blown me out of the water lately.

do the Orange 30s have EL34s or EL84s?

TS, you're definitely wanting a british sounding amp, lots of punk and modern punk has that marshally crunch, and obviously a lot of classic rock as well (not all, but at least half of it). and if you're going british voiced, you want some EL34s running in your amp, those bad boys will give a lot of roar, where as EL84s will be a little more on the raspier high end side. EL84s sound great, and really similar to EL34s, but they're still lacking in a way IMO. not saying you can't get absolutely ballsy rockin tones from them, just that it doesn't seem as well rounded out, seems to have less low end and slightly less midrange.

i still say a Randall RM model, put EL34s in the amp, rebias it obviously, and get yourself either a Brown (discontinued but i have one and LOVE it for classic/hard/modern rock) module, or a Plexi or SL+ module, as well as either a tubescreamer OD or boost pedal for anything heavier. and a clean module of your choice of course for the cleaner stuff, unless you just prefer to lower your volume on the guitar for cleans.

hope this is helping.

What is your closest major city and put the Peavey 3120 on your list too. Try to play it with a better cab then that Peavey cab they are sitting on now.

Have you already researched what amps those bands you listed use.

Closest major city is New York City.

I've researched what I could, as I said, I know Paramore uses DSL100s and Dual Recs. I know Tom DeLonge now uses AC30s, but his tone sucks now anyways so I don't want to compare to him. Green Day, I've heard they're using Plexis now...and not sure about the others really.

Search your craigslist for good deals bro. I'm hittin' the sack but I'll look at what you found tomorrow and comment on those.

Go to musical instruments after you select which part of NYC and type in 'amp' in search bar. I bet there is tons of stuff...Good luck.

According to Thomann.com the Orange Rocker 30 has EL34s.

I'm in love with the Rockerverb 50 which def has EL34s
6V6's actually. An EL34 variant, but different sounding.
The Rockerverb is cool, smoother than a Marshall with a lot of clarity in the crunch.

The Rockerverb 100 has EL34's

I tried both and much preferred the cleans on the RV50.

^lol everyone slips up every once in a while.

i guess the TS would have to be more descriptive of what pop punk sounding bands he wants to sound like. but i'm still confident a marshall sounding amp with EL34s will be best. IMO of course.

Yeah, sorry about that guys. I should have checked first. I could have sworn they were EL34's but maybe I was basing that on my ears and not my eyes.

GNRjungle - what about some of this stuff? If you've got wheels I'd suggest maybe setting up some appointments to check some of these out. There was also a Dual Rec, a Triple Rec and a AC30CC on you Clist as well. Good luck.
