So I'm thinking about getting an overdrive pedal, probably the Bad Monkey, and I was just wondering about exactly how it will work since I've never owned an OD before.

Will it be kind of like adding a third channel to my amp, giving my clean channel a light distortion sound or will it just be a volume boost on the clean channel? I've heard people say both. Sorry if that's a stupid question.

It can be both (well, one at a time anyway)...

To run it as a clean boost, just keep the gain at zero. It will still add some coloration, namely a mid boost, depending on where you leave the EQ knobs.

Bring up the gain to bring on the distortion.

Oh ok. I actually kinda figured that right before I read your post. I just wasn't thinking. And it can also work on the lead channel to 'tighten up' your distortion, right? What exactly does that mean?
