I just watched the 2001 film "Donnie Darko" with Jake Gyllenhaal. I didn't know what to expect before I saw it as I had no prior knowledge as to what the movie was about. I must say I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away. I would probably give it 3 out of 4 stars. It was really confusing, I was wondering if anyone else has seen it and if they could clarify some points about the movie. It raises so many questions. Who else here in the pit has seen it or is confused like me and so many other people?

If you're confused it's because you're not smart. You should apply for a position down in the local McDs promptly, or become a solicitor.

Its a pretty solid movie, but way overhyped / overrated IMO.

Worth watching one or two more times to better comprehend the plot and the philosophical underpinnings of the film. Some people give it more credit than its due though, treating it like some mythical godlike creation or something.

I didn't enjoy it, but only because everyone I knew/know built it up so much, that when I finally saw it, I was extremely let down. I've watched it multiple times, trying to enjoy it, but still can't.

This has also happened with Superbad, Juno, Happiness, Oldboy, Napoleon Dynamite, etc.

Now I usually don't ask peoples opinion of movies until after I see them.

It was not overhyped at all. In fact its popularity was affected by 9/11 in the fact that the movie involved a plane crash. It has only become popular over the past couple of years with all of these kids wanting to be counter-culture and what not so they go and watch weird anti-conformist movies. I saw the movie on accident 4 or 5 years ago. My friend and I rented it thinking it was a horror movie because of the cover. I personally loved the movie from the first time i saw it and glad that I found another movie that made me think really hard.

The sequel was **** (S. Darko). I rented it the day it came out for $1 and it was the worst $1 movie i have ever rented.

I always get Donnie Darko confused with Donnie Brasco. Donnie Brasco was really good and Johnny Depp was awesome in it. I haven't seen Donnie Darko though.

I meant overhyped in the sense that it has a sort of cult following and people often gush about it being so incredible and the best thing since baked bread, etc. Mostly the people you are referring to in the bolded part of the quote, who really don't know jack about film and blow their load over it because they think it makes them seem cool if they "get" such a complex and "deep" film. I saw it a couple of years after it came out after seeing people rave about it online, so it was overhyped to me in that respect.

I liked the concept of it, but people built it up too much for me to enjoy. Plus I was drunk.

First saw it on TV during a bout of insomnia. Jesus, I thought the world was ending around me. Mild psychosis does that to ya.

Haha I am watching TV right now and there is a man in a bunny suit. Creepy!

I mean it makes sense but it makes you think too hard and it has quite a few unanswered loopholes . On top of that it wasn't that terrific of a film. I still enjoyed it though.

A Scanner Darkly. Now there's a film that makes your brain hurt. Skip that one if you haven't already seen it.

Or maybe because it is actually a pretty confusing film, anyone who says they wasn't confused after watching Donnie Darko is a liar.

It's a good movie, just do NOT, EVER, watch the sequel. Rediculously awful, just the same thing again. Like the dirty dozen's sequel, ruins the original.

Why? I thought 'A Scanner Darkly' was a good adaptation of the novel, with sweet story and sweet visual effects. Definitely a worthwhile watch for many people (people who enjoy movies that make them think).

Yeah A Scanner Darkly is a bit strange but I enjoyed it a lot.

Donnie isn't too confusing. Give it a second watch and things will make more sense. I love that movie, simply because I block out whatever movies get overhyped so when I get to watching them I enjoy them. =]

I like Donnie, but after seeing it twice it loses it's appeal.

It is also over rated here. Everyone is like ohhh Donnie Darko is the best movie...

That's pretty much what I don't like about the Director's Cut. It basically spoon feeds you the plot and twists instead of letting you figure them out yourself
