whenever i hold a chord or single note for no more then at least two seconds it starts to make a wavy kind of noise, like a tremolo effect. is this because of my amp or because of my pickups? any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's starting to feedback to me?

Could be a combination of both if your pickups aren't properly shielded.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

what guitar/amp do you have? How close are you sitting/standing to your amp?

my guess is you have a tremolo and your springs are vibrating. get a couple of foamy ear plugs and put em in between the springs
