It's done by tensing your throat, and it's bad for your chords. You can do it, quite a few singers do, but don't do it ALL the time.

I usually do it by adding more air that's what's necessary for the note. Keep in mind though that James Hetfield is a full grown man. If you're any younger than in your twenties, I doubt your voice will sound that gruff.

Exactly. Why do you think Hetfield stopped singing like that? He damaged his vocal cords, and basically learned that if he continued to do it any longer, he would barely have a voice left within a few years.

I would recommend not doing it at all.
