i dont have any good sources or connections that are well informed on this topic, so i figured id come here.

ive recently decided i want to replace my stock radio, and put in a good aftermarket stereo in my car. i also figured i might as well get an amp and a sub or two, depending on what id be spending.

my problem: i have no idea what i should be looking for. what brands should i trust? where should i buy? what are decent amps for a single 10" or 12" sub? what kind of stereo should i buy or what specs should i look for?

thanks for the help!

EDIT: i dont think it matters, but i drive a 2001 ford explorer

Online is the cheapest, I would avoid car stereo stores at all costs. Mtx jackhammer and JL are good brands for subs. If you wanna spend a crapload you can get bose but Mtx jackhammer is the best for the money. and the loudest 12" sub. You can pick them up for around $110 each online.

For the Stereo I would get whatever brand you feel like. Your speakers are what gives you quality. Buying a cheaper stereo will make it easier to fork out the money for better speakers and subs. But dont get one thats really crappy and shoddy looking that you can expect to die on you. Just make sure it has an mp3 player hookup since the cd's are becoming obsolete. Many bands, especially small ones, stopped even selling cd's and went straight to the online mp3 for downloads. Besides, an mp3 player with 10 hours of music on it will keep you from getting bored or having to search underneath the back seat at 75 miles an hour.

The amps are a tough one, it all depends on how many watts your subs are gonna be. The 12" jackhammer ususally has about 800W so i would go at least to that. But remember, don't overpower the sub too much and have it turned up all the way, they will blow.

What i have in my car is: Boss 1200 watt amp, Pioneer Headset, Sony Xplod 12", Boss 12", 2 x 6"x9" Sony Xplods. Yeah bitches

MTX is pretty dear here, and for the price of sony, boss, clarion etc they can do just as much. Just remember you don't want it so loud that your going deaf.

ahah its okay. i mean, it IS a decent car. its better than driving a 1991 escort with a different color driver side door and saying i want to invest in subs. i atleast start with a good car.
