He doesn't have a UG account so I'd like maybe a few amps I can tell him to look into.

His favorite genre is thrash metal above all else.

From what I see his favorite bands/biggest influences are:

Megadeth, Pantera, Judas Priest, Metallica , Iron Maiden.

These seem to be the main ones. His favorite guitarist of all time is Dave Mustaine and recently was telling me how much he digs Dimebag-esque tone. Although he's really into the oldschool 80's thrash tone I think.

That's all I got lol

EDIT:

Price range is around 800-1000 US Dollars

we need a budget? tube or solid state? bedroom or gigging volume?

and does he use any pedals with it because those bands use vastly different tones.

Tube and giggin volume. He doesn't own any pedals.

Those bands really influence his playing style. Out of those bands, the ones that I feel he really might like in terms of tone are definetely

Pantera

Megadeth

Metallica

I'm pretty sure he wants a really good thrash tone since that's his main playing style.

I like how those are mostly marshalls lol.

I think the original one that he was looking into was the Peavy Vyper that was like 800 USD (I forget which version). But admitted he's barely knowledgeable when it comes to amps.

Vypyr for 800?
the most expensive vypyr is a the tube 120 which is 500.
i also suggest a Peavey XXX, Butcher and a Randall V2.

my other suggestion is full of marshalls because old school thrash bands USES those Marshalls

Look into a used Mesa Mark series, if you can find one for that price range you will be very impressed, also if you can get the damn thing eqed right you will also be blown away. But I also would look into a used Peavy 6505, very good high gain amp. I use a valveking for thrash, but I'm a low budget kinda guy.

Marshels are nice too, but everyone uses them, I personally like the unique tone of Peavy and other brands.
#11
Yup marshalls all the way for the old metallica and megadeth tones. Mustaine switched to line six digital **** for a bit in the 90s but im pretty sure hes back to marshalls now. Dime used solid state randalls for the majority of his life. But they made him a signature krank before he died.

Otherwise, the Marshalls are a good starting point, unless he's serious about a Dimebag tone...

......

It's what dimebag did with his "tone", not the tone itself.

I'd say get a decent JCM copy, like the Sovtek MIG or Peavey VTM? Then he will have money left over for a decent boost too, maybe even a new pickup.

if he can afford it the Randall V2 Ninja is better since it has the graphic EQ if he wants to shape his tone further than standard three band.

Why can't you go used?

A lot of people say that, but when you tell them you can get an amp that cost twice what you'd spend new, and most amps are built pretty solidly... they change their mind quickly.

Orange Tiny Terror apparently makes for an awesome Kill Em All type tone, so it's probably worth trying out. Other then that I say Marshall JCM 800, Peavey 6505+, Randall V2 Ninja, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. Maybe check out a Krank too.

Why won't he go used?

If he digs Dimebag's tone, just get him to grab an old SS amp...Randall RG100ES in particular.

Possibly, but it worked. I guess this would be the third age of my life, the age where I sig people.

Really, I like feeling like what I say is full of win, and MatrixClaw made me feel that for the very first time.

On Topic: Tell your friend to get an amp that is meant for guitar.

Ok guys new criteria.

His budget is no higher than 800 USD which obviously won't get him anything like a JCM or a Randall V2.

He said he'd prefer to keep it a combo amp instead of a head and cab.

Actually Mustaine still uses Line 6 if you check out his most recent rig. So I'm gunna go ahead and guess that maybe he likes them?
