I'm looking into getting tones for more of a Power Metal/ Progressive Metal style.
(Think of Dream Theater, Stratovarius, etc)

I'm normally a Jazz player and I play a good bit of Hair Metal, but I have rigs set up for these kind of things.

As of now I have a Holy Grail Reverb which I use through either a 1965 Silvertone 1481 (honestly, one of the best amps I've ever played) for the Jazz.

and for more Rock stuff I have a Crate GLX65 (dont judge, I'm a fan of them, haha)

I also have a Keeley Mod DS-1, a Satchurator (it surprised me, honestly. Sounds pretty nice through the Silvertone also).

But quite frankly, I can not find out much about what these people use, or what some good substitutes would be.
(Yes, I looked at the Guitar Rig of the months stuff, and granted I do enjoy Jani's tone for whatever reason, it's not exactly what I'm looking for)

I'm not real worried about price, although very expensive is not preferred.

Most likely for this I'll be playing an ESP LTD EC-500 (until I buy another guitar, but at the moment that's what I have best fit)

Thank you in advance

Too loose sounding for power metal in my opinion. A Mark IV or something would be much better.

He could use an overdrive and an EQ to tighten it up.

I'm not real worried about if it's Tube/Solid State.
Combo/Head-Cab

I'm pretty much asking for opinions, regardless of exactly what it is.

I'm looking for tone, so whatever you seem to think works ^.^

If I were to go for a, let's say, Mark IV. What else would I need?
Are you saying all I'd need is the amp? Because I hardly ever see anyone who just uses an amp like that.

but yeah, I'm not really thinking about budget. I'm just wondering what kind of things these people use.

you need an amp and the "basic" pedals(Eq,Phase,OD,Chorus,Delay,Tuner).

Well, you have something like this, Criss Oliva.

According to this, his setup is real simple. Basically consisting of a chorus, two basic overdrives, and amps through a clean channel.

Is this actually a logical set up? I've never tried dialing in through 2 overdrives

Is there really more to it? or does something like this really get the kind of tone they are showing it does?

I disagree with that. A Mark IV doesn't NEED any pedals to sound awesome, sure they could probably improve it but their not a necessity like an OD and EQ are for a Valveking.

I say get the Mark IV (or III if its too expensive), it's a great amp and you'll probably find it replacing your Crate and maybe even you Silvertone too.

Although it is known as a tweakers amp so don't spill any haterade on the amp if you don't get your tone in a second. If your a plug 'n play kind of dude then it might not be the amp for you.

so you're saying that with this amp I wont "need" any OD pedals? So I'm going to assume its OD is pretty good XD
Do you know, by chance, any artists who use this amp so I can hear what it's like?

That's exactly the kind of thing I am looking for.
Basically I'm trying to figure out what kind of amps/equipment get the kind of sound I'm looking for. Then I'll work from there.

Thanks everyone!
