I need to choose a song to play for Monday (to start learning) suitable for a high school band class.

Preferably in the genre of "rock" and using standard (EADGBe) tuning.

I can't decide... all the songs I want to do are in at least 1/2 step down tuning and/or metal that wouldn't go over well with the others in the class...

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I know it sounds bad, but I'd like something that has tabs readily available. I'm supposed to bring tabs for everyone else.
My username lies. I play an LTD.

Led Zeppelin
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Green Day
Incubus
Oasis
Pearl Jam

I mean "rock" is a VERY broad genre dude. Give us some sort of specifics

edit: those bands were just off of the top of my head btw. just pick something you hear on the radio.

Specifics? Well... kind of hard to be really specific. Generally...

- Has overdrive/distorted guitar, but not "blow the roof off" distortion
- Doesn't have foul language
- No exceedingly difficult solos
- Suitable to a wide audience

iron maiden-run to the hills
Disturbed
Shinedown
Kansas-Carry on my wayward son

You're still not specific enough

Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd. Nobody notices or cares that it's a half a step down. Seriously I play it for people all the time and not one person has ever told me it sounded "off".

Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers. Clean, but everyone knows it.

The Ocean - Led Zeppelin. Awesome song

Gone Away - The Offspring.

Limelight - Rush

Pork and Beans - Weezer

The Sweater Song - Weezer

Icky Thump - The White Stripes

Stellar - Incubus

Foreplay/Long Time - Boston

Anything AC/DC

those are just random songs from itunes that kinda meet those requirements

edit: woulda mentioned Shinedown, but none of their stuff really stands out guitar wise asides from .45

More specific? Ok I'll try... >.<

- Not overly "heavy," so Disturbed is kind of a write off as it's nu-metal
- No bad references (eg. Drugs, alcohol, etc.). They could maybe be mentioned, but the song can't revolve around them.

- Shinedown might work... Some of their stuff is good... and they use Drop D, right?

Easily a Journey Song. Don't Stop Believing LoL. If your playing in a group with singers/accompaniment go Journey... You can't lose. BUT Solo playing go for something with a bit more melody on the guitar part like Lights by Journey or I Don't know by LostProphets. Dropped D is the 2nd easiest tuning next to standard. Just tune 7th fret low E to match A string and you're set to go =]. Then Tune to 5th instead to go back to standard. I know the songs i gave you have more than 1 guitar, sorry i just like those songs haha.

Hmm... Blink 182? Maybe.

I also started thinking maybe something by Sum 41.

And 45 by Shinedown sounds good (listening to it).

...Except that it sounds like it's about suicide.

Good point.

However, most of the other songs we've done nobody has really heard either.

EDIT: What about "Never Too Late" by 3 Days Grace?

Pretty much everyone knows it, it's easy to play, and I don't think its message is too "bad" overall.

45 isn't necessarily about suicide. It's definately not happy, but not suicidal. Take it as you will though.
Another song is Second Chance or Burning Bright. Burning Bright (Sanford Mix) is probably my favorite song from Shinedown, and it's def got a good message.
You could do Thunderstruck.
Theres a ton a good TABs for that, and everyone knows it.
