I think the best Metal Album of 2009 goes to either:
Mastodon - Crack The Skye
or
Baroness - Blue Album

Please do not post Slipknot's All Hope Is Gone for the love of god

I raise you Breaking Benjmain - Dear Agony.

edit: Seriously though, Mastodon's new one is pretty nice. I'm not a huge metal fan at all so I have no idea what half of you guys are talking about.

All hope is gone came out last year, TS.

and so far no metal album that's been released this year has succeeded in impressing me enough to stop listening to "ObZen" from '08.
I can give you a hint as to what 2010's best metal album will be, though.

Yo this nigga knows his shit man.

There was a lot this year, especially in doom metal, but I have to say that Crystal Viper - Metal Nation and Hyborian Steel - An Age Undreamt Of... stuck out for me.

Also @ Kreator, duuuuude such a great album. I haven't seen anyone mention it yet on these forums. He somehow manages to reinvent himself yet again, everything is totally removed from the dirgey deprived and muddy Rain Upon.

In no order.

Crack the Skye- Mastadon
Blue Album- Baroness
Everything is Firs- Ulcerate
Those Whom the Gods Detest- Nile
The Great Misdirect- BTBAM
Chapters Of Repugnance- Defeated Sanity

The last 2 have not come out but the tracks releases show that they will be solid albums.

I actually just bought both Crystal Viper albums a few days ago! I thought they sounded awesome when I used to do random songs from them on youtube and such but after listening to Metal Nation a few times I'm not very impressed thus far. I definately need to give it some more listenings then.

Sword + Hot + Speed/Power metal + Vocals that are the female equivalent of John Cyriis

She's definitely in my fantasies.

Haha. Until I actually got physical copies of the albums I never even realized that it was a girl on vocals. She's got a good voice though.

Fen's Malediction Fields takes the cake thus far

close would be Cormorant's Metazoa and Drudkh's Microcosmos

Isis' Wavering Radiant gets an honourable mention, and I must add that I haven't listened to Blue or Ahab's new release yet.

Yeah neither did I. Sounds like a cross between Black Knight's vocalist and Agent Steel's. Great stuff, but I do know what you mean earlier. Sometimes I just find Crystal Viper to be lacking something...or maybe having a little too much of something. Sometimes I find them to be one of the greatest new bands out there.

Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague
Job For A Cowboy - Ruination

It's a tie between those two for me. I wouldn't say Crack the Skye to be the BEST album of the year...it was alright. I found myself bored through most of the album though.

hmmm hard one. there hasnt been too many OUTSTANDING metal albums this year.
imo:
1.Mastodon - crack the skye (really good songs in this album although it get a bit boring towards the 3/4 mark. The Czar was my favourite song on there)
2.Dethklok - dethalbum 2 (Great death metal album, a lot people dont really take this band seriously but any d metal fan would agree this is a good album)
3.Obituary - darkest day (good guitaring in some songs, down point is the vocals are hard to get used to, it sounds a bit like a thrash metal band trying to pull off a death metal album)

not many good albums this years. NEXT YEAR will be interesting, a lot of my favourite bands are bringing out new albums. rumours are: MACHINE HEAD(yay), opeth, Slipknot(i think), and more! will be sic

The devil wears prada - with roots above and branches below.

Go ahead, flame me.

I would agree with you if they were metal. Their new album was a far better step above their last two, but I still wouldn't consider them anything more than scenecore.

or
Melechesh - Emissaries

About 3 years too early for this thread.
