Hi, I was wondering if anyone had some tips for making my computer run faster. I try to do everything I can to help it run faster, but a lot of the time it still just freezes, especially when I run Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop... Here is what I have tried... Also, it's an older Macbook and over 20gb of free space on my internal hard drive...

I have tried:
Moving all my music to an external hard drive (It's over 70gb, so that helped)
Doing the disk defrag thing under Disk Utilities
Shutting the computer down every few days as opposed to leaving it in sleep mode
Only running one-three programs at a time instead of a bunch all at once

Is there anything else I should be doing to keep it from freezing up and going so slowly?! Could I upgrade the processor or something...? I know I could take off all the loops that I have for Logic, because my Logic program isn't working now, but I don't know how to do this without removing the loops from Garageband, too...

I'm sorry if there's some kind of official Mac help thread or something, but I don't have much time right now, and I need to get my computer working faster!! Thanks everyone!! Please don't spam... I actually need help...

Tl;dr - Any tips for speeding up Macbook? It freezes/goes really slowly a lot...

Just back everything up to your external via Time Machine, and then reinstall your OS.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Haha acutally, that would be "should have bought a PC."

But, no thank you. That would have been a poor decision for what I'm doing on my computer... I understand why some people would want a PC, and there are arguments for both sides, but in my case, a Mac makes more sense.

Please don't turn this into a Mac vs. PC thread, either... Thanks!

EDIT: Xiao - If I do that, will I lose the photos that I have on my internal hard drive? The reason why I haven't done a lot of these things is because I don't know how to move the photos that I have stored on Lightroom off of my internal hard drive, but still be able to access them in Lightroom...

I'd really like to be able to move my storage for photos in Lightroom onto my external hard drive, like I did with my music from iTunes. I don't know how to do this, and it also scares me, because I don't want to lose all my photos if my external crashes or something... Any solutions for this? Haha

GaijinFoot - Please leave the thread and go read about spelling, grammar, literary devices, and PCs.

Yeah, sorry guys, but I don't think I can delete my 212GB of pr0n...

Xiao - But the problem is, I only have 20 some gb free on my internal, so I'll probably run out in the next few months/year... So, even if I have time machine, I'll be out of space on my internal, and my computer will run even more slowly than it does now... I don't want to lose my photos or my music, though!! And my iPod is pretty much full (80gb iPod with over 70gb of music on it).

Not necessarily. Part of what is taking up space on your system is old system files that don't get deleted but aren't needed. They can take up a pretty sizable chunk of your HD. With a reinstall, those files aren't retained even after Migration.

Your music and photos are in your /User/name/Music and Pictures.

Free space on your hard drive doesn't speed up your pc.
You need to limit the number of programs that are starting up when you use it.

In the background, not ones you open.

edit: or ya get a new computer

Well regardless of whether it speeds up my computer, I really need to free space up on my hard drive, because I'm going to run out of space for my photos... And I do try to minimize the number of programs I'm running at the same time, and that does help a little, but I just feel like my computer should run faster... I should upgrade to a new computer soon and just start from scratch, keeping only the photos and music that I need... I don't know if/when I'll have enough money for a new computer, though...

Does anyone know how much it is to have a new hard drive put in a macbook? If it was around a terabyte, that would be ideal...
#22
No I mean there is stuff that runs at startup that you don't know about.

I know in windows you can see this with msconfig but idk about macs

Get a 1-2TB external HD, back up your shit in Time Machine, reinstall the OS. Works 60% of the time, every time. If that doesn't speed it up, buy more RAM or get a new computer.

How old is this computer anyways?

The computer is 2 or 3 years old I think...? It's just the black Macbook... I'm not as worried about backing up my computer on Time Machine as I am about running out of space... I don't know how to store photos on Lightroom on an external... I'm going to look that up on Google and see if there are any people who can help.

Also, I'd really like a 1tb internal so I wouldn't have to have my external to listen to music, etc...

Any idea how much it would be to put a 1tb hard drive in a Macbook?

Just open up the program and check its Preferences. It should have a directory indicating where it is storing the photos.

There's not really any 1TB HD's for laptops yet. And you don't have to buy a "Mac" hard drive. But you do have to make sure the physical form is compatible with your laptop. Check www.newegg.com

Upgrade ram. Don't know if you can change processors on a mac.

Try defragmenting the drive (if possible on a mac). Also try deleting unnecessary files.

Unless you have a virus, you'll most likely need an upgrade.

It's a really, really important Windows folder that pretty much, IIRC, renders your PC useless if you delete it. Scourge told a nooblet to do it way back in the Day, as a joke, and the nooblet did it. So now it's bannable.

Microsoft should have named it "don't delete".

Oh, and if you're willing to take more drastic action, and can back up all of your data, you might even want to format your hard drive and reinstall your OS. I've never done/tried it on a Mac, but if you have your OSX or whatever disc I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. Formatting your system is the most effective way of increasing performance... but you'll also lose all of your programs, and your data if you didn't back it up.
