So it's time for me to sit down and write my personal statement which is going to sent away to various universities hoping they will accept me and offer me a place.

The only problem is I'm having a really hard time deciding what i want to do. I'v narrowed it down to a few.

I would really appreciate it if you guys could give me some feedback on what I'v chosen and if i could make a decent living out of it.

Environmental Biology
Politics
Physiotherapy
Archaeology & Palaeoecology

[EDIT] I'm currently studying Biology, Geology and History.

My other option is my band who are possibly touring the UK and America in a few months time..It's a once in a lifetime opportunity but i don't think my parents will ever approve

Help me out pit I'm feeling really shitty right now.

Go with the band for a bit, if it works out, then you'll be alright, if not then you can come back and work on one of those.

Throw it away in The Pit.

if you don't go with the band you'll regret it forever, if that doesn't work out, get a normal job
#8
There's no point doing applying for anything if you're not with it 100%. Take a year out or something, figure out yourself what you want to do.

As for making a living you can do that with any degree. Only very specialist jobs will be picky about what you did.
#10
your parents wont approve!? what kind of nonsense is that? bullshit. try the band thing out first imo, see how that goes... if you dont like the lifestyle, go back to one of your other options.

btw, cam, your avatar is funny as hell

This. Do the tour, and when you get back go to college.

Welcome to the club bro. I have no clue what I want to do with my life other than write music and chill with my friends.

Go with the band.

University will ALWAYS be there, loans will ALWAYS be there. Dont throw away something that could only happen once

Uni isn't fantastic, its boring and the majority of the time your learning stuff you've already been taught.

I have considered taking a year out. It would mean i could try the band thing out, make some funny and maybe even figue out what i truely want to do.

At the moment its work work work, in haven't found anything I'm really passionate about other than music.

Maybe radio or TV presenter who knows?

One thing: if you take out a gap year, do a few things constructive. Universities hate people who just say they took one "as a break". Get a job or pick up a language or similar

I friend of mine was seriously considering going into archeology when he applied to uni last year. Although it wasn't what stopped him, no archeologist has ever made much money until they become experts in their field and start publishing books. And even then they don't make much. It is not a glamourous job but I have no doubt that it is interesting and rewarding.

I wouldn't do politics if you paid me so I won't comment on that and I know hardly anything about the other two uni options so I can't comment on those either.

As for touring with your band... Why not defer your entry and tour in your gap year?

I'm guessing youre young, so don't worry, there's PLENTY of time, don't waste that time, but don't try and slave away not enjoying life while trying rush through it either. Try and do something that is satisfying for the time being but also something that you think will be a useful tool for later on, regardless if it's career wise or not.

I have no doubt that it would. My opinions on politicians though aren't exactly positive and politics is one of those things that gets me all riled up.

Unless your going to die, dont say that your life is going to be over, eh?

Do the tour. Not many people can say they've toured, it'll give you time to figure out what you want to do with your life.

It's not that I want to be a politician, i can move into Education or broadcasting too but fair enough. It mighn't be my cup of tea either anyway.

I'm seeing a lot of feedback about my band. If i told my friends i was taking a gap year and wanted to tour with my band they would laugh hysterically.

Oh how i would love to prove them all wrong

Prove them wrong then. Defer your entry into university and tour.

Seriously, this. If you get what is possibly a once in a life-time offer, friggin do it!!! Uni will ALWAYS be there. We have a few 30 something guys in maths, someone in his 40's, couple in their 20's etc etc. Go on tour if the chance is there

Take the band opportunity if you want... once your 18, its not your job to impress your parents anymore... Its your life live it the way you want and not the way other people would like to see you live it. And if it doesnt work out... who says you cant go back to school?
I want to go as far to the edge without going over. Out on the edge, you can see all kinds of different things.
#31
use school as back up.
and so what if your parents dont approve. parents are supposed to raise you to be the best that you can be. if that means being in a band and touring and making it then tough shit for them. they probably dont want you to go on tour because they dont wanna lose you and theyll miss you [rather than because they're asholes. unless theyr're one of those close minded parents but now im going off on a tangent] but that is extremely selfish of them and you should go anyway. especially if its a once in a lifetime oppurtunity.
later in life you dont want to be thinking, "what if i went on that tour?"
it will drive you nuts as you get old. especially if your band made it with someone else.
a good example of this is that movie "the rocker" pretty funny you should watch it.

but the main point is:

use school as backup. in case you dont make it youll have that fall bck on. i know you would rather be in a band than wear a suit/whatever.
#32
School or band? I'd go with school. Nothing is certain in the music industry. A degree is a degree.
#33
Man, tour up that bitch, THEN go to college.

Hmm... If you're unsure about what degree you want to take, and your options are so varied. Maybe going to uni now isnt such a good idea. It's such a commitment of time and money that you only have one go at really... and that usualy carves the rest of your life... don't choose until you know you wont regret it.

It's a tough decision guys. I want to follow my dream although i can't help thinking we'll get nowhere and **** up. I know the potential is there, it's just a matter of channelling it into something constructive that we can use to "make it" as a band.

**** school. I declined playing bass in a band that eventually played one of the largest music festivals in my province and rubbed shoulders with Tom Petty, all for school I ceased giving a damn about halfway through. Go for the tour.
