Did anybody hear about this? Here's a link to the article:
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/05/a-mcdonalds-at-the-louvre/
its not mentioned in the article but in my French class we were having a discussion on this but the part that pissed me off the most is that "McDonalds is a significant part of American Culture." (Be prepared for a wall of text, its rant time.)

First off, the Louvre is known as an art museum, and a place of culture. How would you feel if your walking by the Mona Lisa and all you can smell is french fries? If you put a McDonalds in a place of culture, it would make it a lot less high class. If you go to the Louvre you're expected to act like someone of a higher class, not a fast food eating lazy person. I'm not going to deny the fact that I have quite a gut and I like my fast food, but if you're going to eat something at the Louvre, you might want to eat something besides a Big Mac.

Secondly, this is highly offensive to Americans and somewhat French people. As I've been told, French people don't eat a lot of fast food and to put this in one of Paris' most prestigious landmarks, and home to some of the finest paintings ever created, a McDonalds is so out of place and if the artist who created some of the works were alive today and knew what a McDonalds was, I would think they would be royally pissed. The artists took so much time on some of these paintings and to have something as low class as a McDonalds there is highly insulting.

Now the offense to Americans part. Firstly, Americans are fast food loving people, but not everybody is like that. This is offensive because this is a gross oversimplification of American culture. Culture is defined as "the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc." From what this says, McDonalds fits nowhere in there. Americans have an excellent culture, but you just have to dig deeper than what the media covers. If you want to see some culture go to Washington D.C., Boston, New York, or any of the original 13 colonies. Also, this is a gross oversimplification of the American foods. If you want to eat a good meal, you don't go to a chain restaurant. You go to a locally owned restaurant. McDonalds is the lowest class food that you can get in America in terms of fast food.

Lastly, this is going to be terrible business for the other restaurants at the place where the McDonalds is being placed. If there is an American tourist there, they won't try something new, they're going to go to a familiar place, McDonalds. And since the amount of tourists in Paris is an exponential amount, this will drive a lot of the other restaurants.
/rant

so lastly pit, I ask you, Do you think there shouldn't be a McDonalds at the Louvre, or is it not that big of a deal?
What are you dense?
Are you retarded or something?
Who the hell do you think I am?
I'm the goddamn Batman.

McDonalds is one of the most recognisable symbols of american culture like it or not.

And also i love art and art museums but the catering normally sucks so its all good.

1. Since Deez is pretty much a symbol of America, couldn't one argue it's a pop art statement to include it, even if it is just downstairs?

2. It's for the tourists, obvs, not the afficionados.

I agree with you, but McDonalds is a big part of American culture, its what made Americans fat, and brought on this thought that being fat is ok, then they sue McDonalds for makeing them fat, thus bringing on the age of sue happy Americans.

But if I didnt know any better, I would say McDonalds bought the Earth, and all its governments, and rules us without us knowing. <_< >_>, *Puts on tin foil hat*

Mcdonalds should jsut be banished.

Seriously? God damn. That sucks. Its an art museum. I would never be able to appreciate art with the smell of that sickly food lingering. This pisses me off.

At least, when you visit, it will cover the smell of pretentiousness.

Who...cares?

I go to an art museum to see art, and that is all. I don't go for the food, especially because of how ridiculously overpriced museum food is. A McDonalds will be a great addition. People can get food quickly at a reasonable price, and resume viewing the art more swiftly.

I agree that it is a sad sign of what we are starting to accept. Fast food is mainstream in every way. But it is definitely a part of our culture. Putting a McDonalds in la Louve seems ridiculous. Maybe they could make an exhibit out of it XD. At least that way it would display it as culture, not just another "Starbucks in the Forbidden Temple" kinda thing.

I went to the Louvre once and there wasn't anyone that was pretentious.

Even thought I hate MC-Donald, i'm not sure if it really matter. I mean, if you read the article, they won't put it in the Louvre, they'll put it in the underground shop (just under the funny glass pyramid) of the Louvre.

I sincerely hope you guys weren't serious when you talk about mcdonald being an important part of your culture, sincerely.

It's not so much that we hold it up as part of our culture (though it is damn near ubiquitous), it's more that it's a really good example of American society's imperialistic capitalism.

The pretentiousness in this thread is overpowering.

You are not better than someone who eats at McDonalds. Obviously, a lot of people like McDonalds, because it is the biggest chain food-establishment in the entire world.

Get off your high horses. Just because you eat chicken speckled with herbs that you don't know the names of doesn't make you better than someone who eats a burger.

As SteveHouse said (Damn you!), one could view the McDonald's itself as art. It could be considered an installation that comments on the wide acceptance of global corporatism.

there's a big gigantic fast food place right beside/upstairs next to the louvre anyway. Last time I was there there was a sign that starbucks was coming soon...

when i was there i was pretty glad there was somewhere to eat. the louvre was awesome, you could easily spend the whole day there.

Because this entire argument is stupid. McDonalds isn't a symbol of America, it's all over the world, and there are hundreds of McDonalds establishments in Paris alone. It's a place to get food, but people decide to get high and mighty about it because they are so much better than those who eat fast food.

It's just a more cost efficient, people friendly, faster way for people to eat in the Louvre so they can return to doing what they want.

Are you even aware of any of the old World Art Fair/Expo?

People erected buildings for them, that's just as much art as a McDonalds
(wow, I remember something from History Of Art).

Yeah, just buildings and lounges and stuff. I like the Socialist Lounge, but I don't remember the artist or when or anything, it was by a Russian and in either in France or Britain.

It's something all over the world that came from..... America. Thus, I choose to use it as a symbol of imperialist capitalism. Is that a slam? Only if you hate capitalism. (Which isn't a hidden slam, by the way, it's totally valid.)
It's a place to get food, but people decide to get high and mighty about it because they are so much better than those who eat fast food.
Or, just maybe, we think it's fun (read: not serious) to analyze the mundane.

You won't. The restaurant is substantially separated from the museum.

Think about the demographic of people who visit art museums. Now think about the demographic of people who eat at McDonalds. Yeah.

Yes, because most tourists go all the way to a distant place just to experience something they can already experience in their own town...

so lastly pit, I ask you, Do you think there shouldn't be a McDonalds at the Louvre, or is it not that big of a deal?

I think the answer to that is pretty clear.
