i tend to play metalcore and heavy metal e.g. Five Finger Death Punch, killswitch engage, slipknot and others but i mostley use various drop tunings so a floyd rose isnt what i would want. any advice on which one to get or any other similar guitars in the same price range would be appriciated.

I'd go for the LTD.
I just don't like the looks of the Epiphone and the LTD 400 series are quite good.

What's your amp? And I would say the Epi just because I do not like actives a whole lot.

I would go with the epiphone simply because you can comfortably sit down with it.

Not to mention the v probably has some serious neck dive.

LTD for sure. It's pretty much better in every aspect except the Epi has more tonal variety than the LTD because of it's 81 85 combo as opposed to the 81 81. The LTD also has a longer scale length, thus it is better for lower tunings like you want.
EDIT: ^ V's are not hard to play sitting down. You put the points on each side of your knee (this is called the classical position) and it's very comfortable (for me at least). My explorer is much more uncomfortable because the body sticks out awkwardly where your arm goes. Where do you get the idea it will neck dive?

Try ebay, allparts.com, musiciansfriend.com, and local shops and what not.

Having played both alot, and owning one (well, i have the v-500. v-401 is just a renamed v-500) i would say v-401. i HATED the neck on the epi, it felt really nasty, the stuff they coated it with.

And I love my V.

So yeah, vote for the V from me!

As for cases for the LTD...
