There has been a lot of whining lately about people starting new threads when a thread on that topic has existed (which, I admit, has been a practice that I partake in.) For example, in this thread, post #47 someone bumped a thread that was several months old. He later explained he searchbared and found a thread on the topic he was going to make a thread on. BUT, a mod closed it shortly after, leading me to be confused.
So in this thread, there will be a poll to decide the ultimate question....

Necro-Bumping

vs.

New threads

Usually the accepted rule of thumb is about 6 months.

Stepcodit: In The Pit mind you.
In places like B&A, bumping is still acceptable for like a year or so.

In the SF section it's like 2 weeks though, duh.

Not sure about the other forums though.

definately new thread. if a thread was made 5 years ago, it's points are probably outdated, most people participating have left and so a new discussion is of need.

if a thread is more than a couple of months old, don't bump it. just make a new one, IMO.
EDIT: unfortunately, there are so many people who are so anal about the rules and report threads that have been done perhaps once or twice before (and then over a year ago), so I dunno. there doesn't really seem to be a right or wrong in this issue.

Someone show me an instance where somebody got flamed for bumping an old thread. I don't believe that anyone cares about necrobumping, it's just something that people addicted to making new threads use as an excuse.

I can't finf any specifics, but I know I've seen threads where guys get ripped on for reviving a thread.
has a terrible signature.

The Pit - don't bump an old (6-12 months) thread. Just make a new one.

S&Lyrics - don't bump an old (1 yr) thread.

GG&A - Bump a thread if you need to.

Same goes for anywhere else. I think that's the way we work it. I could be wrong, forgive me if I am.

Personally, I like it this way. I don't like it when threads in the Pit are bumped. Although, bumping something in S&L is not exactly punishable, but under certain circumstances it is.

Personally, I only close necro bumped threads because the thread was a bit crap to begin with, but not really bad enough to be closed when it was fresh. So it's a case of making a rubbish thread that died stay dead.

This is exactly what I'm saying, you guys say it happens but theres no proof. I'm in the Pit every day and have never seen anyone get flamed for reviving an old thread unless it was extremely dumb (like the Billy Mays dying one). Personally if I want to know something that has been asked in a thread that hasn't been posted in for 5 years, you bet your ass I'm bumping it, flame all you want.

EDIT:

look at the link in the op

All I see is one person saying "why did you bump this?", I wouldn't really call that flaming...

EDIT2: Ok they get on him a tad bit more than that, but I still think it's prettty negligible.

I don't have any concrete examples, but I've seen enough examples where people are like "OMG OLD THREAD" and "WTF NECROBUMP!"

i made a poetry thread no so long ago and it didnt go so well then some one made another one that was better so i guess thats a plus point for the new thread argument

In the Pit: new thread. In other forums: bump.

But don't quote me on this, because I have no say on the forums.

It depends on the thread. If it's a thread where it's specifically about each post, for instance the You Laugh You Lose, or Stupidest Comment Somebody has made about music, or if it's about a band, then Necrobumping is fine because it's likely that the thread would continue.

But if the thread is about the thread starter, "cool story bro" threads, a guitar build, or a disussion thread like this, it's likely nobody cares about the topic anymore so one person adding in their 2 cents year late is a bit pointless.

I've always thought that it's better to bump old threads. If your post has a point to it.
If there's been more than 3 threads covering the same topic as a new one that's been made, then I wouldn't think that's cool.
