What type of scales are these called?
A lot of groove metal bands use them or something I think.

I can tell you what kind of scales most metal bands use to write their music...
Mostly they use Aeolian (Natural Minor), Harmonic Minor (A natural minor scale with a raised seventh) Melodic Minor (A natural minor with a raised sixth and seventh), Phrygian and Phrygian Dominant (A phrygian scale with a major third), Locrian, Whole-Half Diminished Scales, Whole Tone scales, Augmented scales. Mind you that Whole-Half, Whole Tone, and Augmented are just a lot of atonal mess, but sound pretty evil sometimes.

Maybe they just changed the scale for the riff?

Well the thing about a lot of death metal and extreme metal is that they have abrupt key changes in most of their songs.

It's like a middle eastern scale or something.
I could draw an example of it but really I just want to know the name.

Soilwork is probably using a Phrygian or harmonic minor scale in the first song, not sure about the second though. It's in a minor key though. Laid to Rest is in D Harmoic Minor I believe.

I'm digging your avatar by the way. In Flames We Trust!
