In the last month I was 1) asked to join a band and 2) purchased a Fender Jazz bass. i love my new baby, great tone. my band is looking at playing some heavy Christian-type music, so i'm looking for a heavier, deeper tone. I have about $500 to play with, i think, but if i could find a dece amp for 300-350 that would be awesome. Should i go with an amp or should i get a cab and a head or what? suggestions would be awesome and very much welcomed. We have a gig for next month, and we're looking for more pretty soon, so it will be used as both a gigging and a practicing amp.

Well you are probably going to need a good 300 to 400 watt amp for giging in heavy music.
NUMBER ONE RULE

NO BEHRINGER!!!

Other than that, it depends on what you need. 300 to 400 watts is purely a guess, because wattage varies between people and bands, but I think its a safe bet.
At 500 bucks Id go for a combo

This has great wattage and is a great price. Its also a very reliable company, and, despite it being a bit over your price range, I think you would be verry satisfied with it.
Another good choice would be

this amp seems to have a good reputation around here.
And if your willing to wait, in December Peavey has a new tour 115 amp. 600 watts and 500 dollars.
...it was bright as the sun, but with ten times the heat

what about an Acoustic B200H head with an Acoustic B115H cab? i was looking a while and someone suggested that combination...

Acoustics generally are decent amps. I don't particularly like them because they are incredibly transparent.

Myself, I'd go for the Carvin. Really wonderful amps at a very competitive price.

Transparent amps don't modify or colour the tone of the bass. Hartke, Carvin and Acoustic are good examples. Non-transparent amps colour the tone giving the sound a tweak that is unique to that amp. Ampeg is the best example of this type of amp.

get the Carvin.

Carvin is pretty colorless without the gain knob too high I hear, but pretty colored with it cranked.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.
