I mean, you don't get a degree when you complete your minor right? I don't understand what the point would be of minoring? The reason I ask is I'm currently a sound recording technology major, and with the industry in the state it's in today I'm not extremely confident about finding a decent job to support myself post college. At the same time I don't really like anything else enough to double major, but I'm thinking of minoring in computer science...would this be pointless?

Should I just change my major to music education? Not really my bag, but at least I'll have a freaking job that I can support myself with when I graduate...*sigh*

So you can show that you are well versed in a subject, which could help you get a job. For example, I'm majoring in Chemistry and plan on minoring in secondary education. This way schools will see that I know chemistry and am well versed in education, thus enhancing my chances to get a job as a chemistry teacher.
If it were socially acceptable, I would drape myself in velvet.

Righto. Well, what's your opinion of what I'm considering?

Again I'm a Sound Recording Technology major, and I'm considering adding a minor in computer science...I'm also considering taking a double major either in computer science or music business INSTEAD of taking on a minor but I'm not sure yet...

I guess it's good to just put you one notch up on your typical peer in your major going for similar jobs as you then, yes?

It just sucks because half the people I know that graduated from the sound recording program here last year are either working at best buy or making 9 dollars an hour in some shitty studio somewhere. I mean I know you "have to start somewhere" but after putting myself through 40k worth of debt I'd hope I can balance doing what I love and making SOME decent amount of money.

No, it's not pointless. I am an Electrical engineering major, and I want to minor in music, so that I can design guitar stuff or work with audio.

Yeah I'm thinking a minor in comp. science would open up some doors for me maybe. For example, my brother in law works for Apple, and he said they're constantly hiring people for their audio testing staff...but I've a feeling something like that might require two degrees rather than just one and a minor but who knows?

minoring in music wont usually help get to "design guitar stuff" or "work with audio." normally music minors are geared towards basic music education stuff, theory ear training etc..... maybe you can find a place that allows you to minor in commercial music, music production, or something similar.

A minor kinda helps you organize your electives into what you really enjoy, basically, or a subfield that helps you in your major field. Like it makes sense to be a pre-med major, biology/chemistry/biochem minor.

Nope, if I was going to Berklee I'd be well over 100k in debt by the end of four years, I believe. I go to a state university, SUNY Fredonia. Pay approx 8 grand a ****ing semester and this is one of the cheapest schools I found that offers sound recording.

FYI Berklee costs over 20k PER SEMESTER, if you're dorming there....it's 14k just for tuition...Not to get off track

School is expensive. Mine's 36k a year if you're also doing room and board.

I don't think it's pointless. I would minor in something, but I'm a biomedical engineering major. I kind of feel obligated to use my technical electives towards courses that would allow me to specialize in a field. I wish my school had more language programs because I'd totally minor in a language that I like.

I may end up with a major in Biology and a minor in philosophy, now that's useless.

definately not pointless. great for getting a job like mentioned by LuckyBoys91. thats basically the point of minors. and chemistry is AWESOME!! right now im going to be majoring in Radiology, but im not getting a minor because im in a 2 yr school, in a specific course. but in 2011 i'll be going to a university, and i might minor in something.

damn, I DONT go to Berklee and my school is not far off...

3 cheers for small private schools....

but on topic
Minors honestly look incredible on a resume, provided it's useful in some way.

Being a Mathmatics major with a Minor in Music Composition will not turn many heads in a job interview (at least not in a good way)

but then again, you never know.

...unless you have a comprehensive major, you need a minor to get enough hours and more importantly upper level hours to graduate from most programs. In fact having a minor is itself a requirement of most BAs and BSes at most universities.

More importantly it's your job to pick a minor that isn't pointless. See, it's not about meeting the minimum requirement like in your pre-collegiate life, it's about taking enough initiative to enhance your own education and skill set.
