Humanity has done some terrible things in times of war, and in the greatest war of all time every faction could be accused of some terrible things:

Nazis and the Holocaust, the British destroying Dresden, Russians shooting their own soldiers, the Americans dropping the Atomic bombs on Japan and the Japanese ravaging the peoples of mainland Asia

But who was the worst in your opinion?

In the poll, sorry I couldnt put France and stuff....they were kinda minor players, being occupied most of the War,

The Americans! They put their poor soldiers in tanks which could withstand a round from a Tiger about as well as a piece of paper would stop a bullet!

Japan or Russia..

In before 'ohmahgawd doh teh jerries cuz they started teh war lolol'.

But seriously, I think the Japanese were pretty cruel on the battlefield. The Germans and Russians slaughtered eachother pretty cruel too, yet on the early western front, the Germans were quite 'fair', if that's the appropriate word e.g. releasing Belgian and Greek POW's after the battles were done.

I voted all were a bad as one another. Each side had atrocities, once you start talking about atrocity on the scale of The Holocaust, Dresden, The A Bombings, Russia's march through Europe, Japan's march through Asia, it becomes pointless to talk about who was "worse"

I find this whole topic rather distasteful... What are we hoping to achieve by saying one side was better than the other? Humanity was degraded by WW2 and the reasons why it was fought, we all lost.

Nazis. No question (my opinion might be a bit put-off by the fact two of my grandparents were part of it, but they were the worst). Second comes U.S.A. The A-bomb was horrible, but they did it for some sort of justifiable reason, so they're far off. Britain might have blown up Dresden, a bad thing, and the U.S.A. had some part in it too, but at first they were the only ones who fought the Nazis (France? ಠ_ಠ.

The Nazi's- For trying to exterminate an entire race.

They were planning to exterminate the whole Europe from polish western borders up to Ural Mountains and resettle it with Germans. Makes much more then 'an entire race'.

Reading about the Japaneses' atrocities and experiments and muders and rapes and them basically treating all of Asia as inferior, it makes me sick.

At least Hitler...(this makes me sicker) had some of honour and limits. Like the Nazis kept PoWs in (reasonably) good conditions, but the Japanese just treated every non-Japanese as sub-human.

Depends on which side you were on. If you were a Nazi, obviously you wouldn't think you were the worst. Then again, you could argue that America were the worst because of the Nukes they dropped.

Like someone else said, everything was horrible, but at least the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had a good reason and a positive effect (e.g., ending the most horrific war in human history). On the other hand, the Holocaust (for example) was committed out of pure hatred and discrimination. Not to say that the bombings weren't horrible, just that they at least had some good effects.

This.

I'd rate Nazi Germany, the USA and Japan as the worst, but that doesn't count for shit. Everybody did bad.

America = Nukes
That's worse than either because it affects future generations, not just the people who were killed/ hurt by it.

I can assure you that it would have been a hell of a lot more of a bloodbath had they actually invaded Japan.

Japan = Pearl Harbor

That is worse than the holocaust.

In what way is it worse? Attacking a military base is worse than killing more than 14,000,000 civilians, including Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, Mentally and Terminally Ill, Disabled, Communists and more?
#33
America had much more than just nukes. The treatment of Japanese-Americans after Pearl Harbor was ridiculous. Their rights were taken from them and they're own country took their belongings and they were placed in camps.

People overlook that one

A good point, haven't heard that before. Nazis are still much, much worse.

Killing innocent people isn't a good effect. (Also 'non-innocent' to be strict).

As someone mentioned: It's pointless to messure who's slaughter was worse. Death of a single man is a tragedy, not to mention milions. As humanity, we all ****ed up between 39-45.

'Cause when you kill a man, You're a murderer. Kill many, and You're a conqueror. Kill 'em all, Oooohhh you're a God!
But there's a difference. Self-defence (even if unwarranted, which it was not, or extreme, which it was), is not the same as genocide.

How can you compare that?

The Japanese made it quite clear that they wouldn't surrender until every man in their country was dead. The US had no other option other than to do something that would completely decimate the Japanese morale and country. It was either that, or have a war that wouldn't end in the near future with countless casualties on both sides.

To compare that to an attempted genocide, that's almost a slap in the face to the holocaust survivors.

Attacking a military base is worse than trying to eliminate an entire race? I completely agree.

The "Rape Of Nanking" is probably the worst chapter in WWII though.

Japan entered Nanking and pretty much killed every single man and raped and killed every woman in the city. About 200-300 000 people died in like 6 weeks. And they didn't just kill people. They pretty much slaugthered them in the most degrading way possible.

And in terms of being worst in WWII. France. As always.
