Okay just out of curiousity do open notes while playing metal have to be palm muted? Because I cant play nearly as fast when I palm mute open notes as when I don't.

Say on master of puppets for example in the intro?

Branding!?!? THAT'S TOO PROGRESSIVE! I say bring back settlement payments in weights of lead and impalement upon wooden stakes!

Yes, music HAS to be done one way and if you try to do it any other way people will point and laugh and break your guitar. Seriously, don't even think about not palm-muting.

totally depends on the song....I find usually open notes arent palm muted unless its the low E string then yeah, its always palm muted

No, of course not.

But it's easier, when you're a beginner (I assume you are, sorry if you aren't). If you practice palm muting, you'll get it after a week or two, maybe less. The other way is playing the notes normally, but then there will be lots of unwanted noise, which will sound bad.

So you'll have to cut it out in some way:
-Use your index finger, and sometimes it is not available or is difficult to use, to mute the strings.
-Palm mute the notes when you want them to stop ringing.

I suggested learning to palm mute, you're gonna need it anyway. Even if you don't want to use it a lot, it's a technique you will have available to make your sound more dynamic.

Metal has a few rules:

1. Gain MAX
2. Treble MAX Bass MAX Middle NONE
3. Scream, grunt or whine
4. Every song must have at least 3 breakdowns
5. Every song must have a solo
6. You must have long hair
7. You must have a metal guitar
8. Your video-clips must have
A. Zombies
B. Dark forest (on fire)
C. Someone dying/wanting to die
D. An old men with a young women in an Amish town
E. A stage with a headbanging crowd
9. Your music is different than all the other bands...
10. Play in at least Dropped G#

So, it says nothing about palm muting!
