i love the sound of a sitar but I have no idea where to start when it comes to learning how to play. How much do they cost? are there any good lessons available online for free?

I wanna play sitar but I can't manage 21 frets and six strings.
I don't think I could handle it.

By the looks of it, it looks bloody hard . The music/note system is totally different to the western music system and you'd probably need a teacher to get anywhere (they say it takes like 40 years to master/learn the sitar well apparently ).

I too wanted to take up the sitar but from looking at the Indian music system (made up of # I Sa= B#/C, # VII Ni= B/Cb, # I Sa= B#/C, # II Re= D etx.) and the fact I live on an island and so little chance of teacher or even buying a sitar, I kinda' gave up .

I'm just aiming to start bodhran soon, (plenty of teachers in Scotland ).

I would buy one, but I can't for political and moral reasons.
If it were socially acceptable, I would drape myself in velvet.

what's wrong with the bodhran?

On Topic, as has already been said, the sitar is difficult/awkward to learn as NW Indian Classical has a completely different microtonal system to western scales, and
the sitar has a bunch of incidental strings that need to be managed. on the other hand...

Yes, people who've been playing for decades like ravi shankar etc do not even consider themselves masters, but i imagine 99% of westerners who want to learn it only want to be able to play to the level of something like Norweigan Wood, so if you have the money....

get a didgeridoo instead

A friend of mine made his own. It's pretty amazing to watch him play it actually.

Its really hard to play. I looked into one, but decided to just get a chapman stick, it seems more practical too.

My friend has one and it is EXTREMELY difficult to play. Like a thousand times harder than i thought.
