The fossilised skull of a colossal "sea monster" has been unearthed along the UK's Jurassic Coast.

The ferocious predator, which is called a pliosaur, terrorised the oceans 150 million years ago.

The skull is 2.4m long, and experts say it could belong to one of the largest pliosaurs ever found: measuring up 16m in length.

The fossil, which was found by a local collector, has been purchased by Dorset County Council.

It was bought with money from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and it will now be scientifically analysed, prepared and then put on public display at Dorset County Museum.

Palaeontologist Richard Forrest told the BBC: "I had heard rumours that something big was turning up. But seeing this thing in the flesh, so to speak, is just jaw dropping. It is simply enormous."

Wow.

guess what, the Blue Whale is still much larger and is still the largest living thing ever. I don't see what's so spectacular about this.

EDIT: blue whales are around 32 meters, they're TWICE the size of said sea monster

Blue whales are the largest animal, not largest living thing ever. There is an underground mushroom that spans miles wide. But I agree that this isn't so spectacular, I've heard of pliosaurs before as well, not much of a surprise that we found one.

You guys realise that a lions mane jellyfish is the largest animal on earth right? Or, depending on your point of view, a species of worm that gets stretched by the pressure underwater can grow to 180feet long. Not a pathetic blue whale

Yes the ribbon worm would be the longest, but largest in terms of mass would be a blue whale.

A Pliosaur could still **** up a blue whale though. How would a blue whale defend itself from attack?

Pliosaur, Imma let you finish, but the Candiru is one of the scariest marine animal ever.
*Shudder*
Also, to the person who said humans are 1.50 metres tall, I'm 1.85+ (last time I checked, which was about a year ago).

Like hell it is!
You're saying a duck used to make soup is superior to a marine reptile, and a beautiful and cute one as well?
